Southwest Airlines Review Summary

Our reviewers give Southwest Airlines a highly positive rating, some going as far as to claim that Southwest is the “greatest airline (they) have ever flown”. Budget conscious consumers love Southwest Airlines airfares, while reviewers who are appreciative of good service say Southwest Airlines generally has the best service and most flexibility. Some of the main drawbacks are that Southwest doesn’t fly everywhere and has cattle car seating. Still not sure which airline to choose from? I flew Southwest Airlines for the first time last year but did not fully appreciate their splendid service until recently. Southwest Airlines is the only airline I will fly now that they travel from Chicago Midway airport to Minneapolis and back. (I live in Chicago but my family resides in Minnesota,...

On the whole, I like Southwest Airlines.  The planes are comfortable, the flights are on time, the flight attendants are very friendly, and the prices are good.  The reason I don't fly Southwest more often is the whole "no assigned seating" thing.  When I do fly Southwest, I hate the idea of having... review »

I had the pleasure, recently, to fly Southwest Airlines four times.  One notably different addition to their routine, is their hilarious bit of comic relief.  The flight attendants, as well as the crew actually "get into the act" of performing, as well as their routine duties.  If you happen to help them out in some way, such as offering to move to a different seat to accomodate a family, they reward you with as many free amenties as they can think of.  The prices are right, the online booking to get your choice of seats, the online boarding passes, and the value are truly unbeatable. ... review »

I travel about 45 weeks out of the year, and have found that after flying on Southwest, United, American, Frontier, Midwest, Continental, Delta, and Northwest, Southwest Airlines are by far the best in absolutely everything:  price, customer service, friendliness, flight availability, on time departures/arrivals (sometimes early arrivals, and make up for those later departures in the air).  For those that have written reviews on bad customer service, cattle-call seating, and being too cheery...wow!  If you have to say that your flight attendants are too cheery, you definitely would fit in with the...

I'm not a big fan of flying anyway, but I couldn't believe the terrible customer service Southwest Airlines has! I just got back from a trip to New England from Denver with a connecting flight in St. Paul. On the way there, the first flight was such a mess I was shocked. I noticed that my boyfriend and I were not sitting next to eachother so I asked if a seat change was possible. The lady at the desk was pretty nice and told us she got us as close together as she could and perhaps somebody would trade us...well, once we boarded and took our seats, we realized that by our changing seats we separated...

I grew up in the great Southwest, so it was a real blow to lose my favorite airline in the late '80s when I moved to Florida. Thank goodness, my wait is over; they have arrived and I can once again fly Southwest!

Southwest is one of the few airlines that allows its customers to purchase one-way tickets without penalizing them. WOO HOO! It also has a teriffic, easy-to-navigate web site that responds to searches by trying to help you find a lower fare. How great is that?

I often use Southwest to do a three-legged trip, a great way to keep in touch with friends when fairly close by for another...

Okay, it's Southwest - no frills. We all know that. But I have paid a lot more on other airlines for the same lack of thrills and I get better service on SWA than anywhere else. Their staff is almost always friendly and helpful. Rarely do they not go out of their way to help.
The seating thing.. I can't believe people still get upset about this. :) Frequent flyer program is the best for anyone who travels a lot around the US. My wife and I get at least one free flight each year, usually one each. Of course we have the SWA Visa card, which racks them up fast.

Mostly, I don't fly Southwest Airlines, primarily because they didn't have a good schedule to my airport. I did fly  Southwest once before, after driving three hours to an airport they served. It was to save money.

That's why I flew this time as well, plus an effective brand presentation that convinced me to give them a try.

First problem was learning, at the airport, that seats were not reserved. I guess regular Southwest flyers know about, maybe even like it. But I'm used to having a seat reserved for me. That gives me some control over where I sit and who I sit with.

Instead, I got a place...

I have traveled several times on Southwest Airlines and have always had a great experience. They allow two itmes in baggage with no charge and a carry on [like a small suitcase or something, purses are not considered your carry on, and there is no extra charge for them]. One of the things I love is that all of the seating is great on this airline. You get to choose your seat you would like, for there is no assigned seating besides being in 'business class'.  You get peanuts and a soda or water of your choice for free but you can also buy popular drinks like monsters, alcohol, and other drinks.... review »

I have had the opportunity to fly with Southwest several times in the past few years and they have always been consistant with their customer service and ease in which to fly in these post 9/11 days,  I know a lot of people who will take any other option to travel, rather than brave the circus that is air travel these days.  For the most part, I'm right there with them, using other options like Amtrak when I have the time and money to do so.  But in the rare occasions where I have to get there immediately, Southwest is my airline of choice.  I have to fly with another carrier for business... review »

What can i say - this airline is the model of great service!

I used to love them for the A-B-C seating and i was really apprehensive when they changed to the current letter+number system, but after boarding 4 times under the new system, all i can say is IT WORKS!

No need to stand on line ahead of time, I can work on my laptop at their new power station desks (at least in MCO) and board quickly and efficently.

I LUV these people!!!

The other day we started on a three week odyssey to do some vacationing and to visit family and friends. The travelers were my honey, her father (87 and using a walker) and I. Our first leg was to get from Vancouver, WA to Kansas City, MO. A diligent search of the internet convinced us that Southwest was the way to go.  I used to fly a lot before I retired and always booked away from Southwest because of their cattle-car boarding policies. But since they had the only non-stops from Portland, OR to KC and were significantly cheaper we decided to try them.

We called to make sure we could get a wheelchair...

After our horrible encounter with American Airlines last year, we decided to stick to only Southwest to avoid anything similar ever happening again.  In March we took the family on Southwest for our vacation.  There were 2 adults and 3 children.  Not only did we get tickets for $239 each total, we got the best service for our kids we could ever hope for.  Southwest offers a snack pack on their flights that includes 100 calorie chips a hoy crackers, a salami stick, and cheese and crackers.  We each got one of those along with a handful of peanuts every hour we were on the plane.  Then the... review »

Southwest airlines are really great! Not only do they offer very competitive fares they are very customer friendly and very prompt in adressing customer issues. We have flown with Southwest several times and have always enjoyed their level of service. The last time we flew with them we had a small issue and their customer service came through. When we booked the tickets 5 months back we didn't notice that our credit card had been charged twice. We had booked a lot of tickets so we somehow missed it while doing on online check in our account. But last month when my husband was going over our accounts...

Southwest Airlines used to be one of the worse US airlines.  It hasn't changed much but the others have, making Southwest one of the best.

Bad things, now good.

1. Before Southwest had no meals, just peanuts.  Other airlines had food.  Now, all the major airlines except one charges for food or has no food.  Southwest has upgraded and has crackers and other snacks for free.

2. Before Southwest let you check in 3 bags and they could weigh 70 lbs.  Now, all the other airlines charges you for even the first bag.  Except Southwest.  You still get 2 bags free, not 3, and they can only weigh...
