Southern Tier is a microbrewer from New York whose products recently became available in the Chicago area. I've enjoyed their Choklat Stout and their Unearthly Imperial India Pale Ale (IPA), so i was intrigued when I saw this on the shelf.

I've liked pretty much anything with a raspberry flavor or smaell since I was a little kid. I imagine it's because my grandfather grew raspberries in his yard and always gave me some whenever I would come to visit.

A lot of Southern Tier's products come in a 22oz bomber bottle. This was in a six pack of 12 oz bottles for $9.99.

This beer was a real disappointment. The raspberry aroma and flavor was minimal. The real flavor was more of a brown ale, and ver bland at that. The bottle did not have a reported abv (alcohol by volume) but I would guess it was in the 4 to 5% range.

Now, this was drinkable, certainly not offensive, but, at this price, I would like to be wowed.

There are other really nice raspberry brews out there, including Wild Berry by the Great Divide Brewing Co, and Rubaeus by Founders Brewing.

As for Southern Tier? They run hot and cold. Choklat Stout and Unearthly Imperial IPA are hot. Raspberry Porter and Tripel (Belgian style ale) are not.

 2 stars.

Yes, it can be disappointing to get a beer that doesn't taste like what it's label promises...

I agree if they want premium money they should knock your socks off with taste! ;) Ron

In response to SpokaneMan's comment from Apr 21, 2008 at 1:28PM:

well, it was better than a sharp stick in the eye, but, if I want a blah beer, there's always Old Style.
