South Beach Diet — 

The only reason I tried South Beach Diet was on the recommendation of my doctor.  I took a blood test that showed I was at risk for diabetes, and he told me I had to change the way I ate to avoid diabetes, and recommended the South Beach Diet.  It changed my life!  I no longer have problems with my blood sugar levels.

I started the South Beach Diet three years ago, and quickly lost 20 pounds and brought my weight to a healthy level for me.  I was able to maintain my healthy eating habits for about a year, and my weight for close to two years.  And, although I have gained some weight back after three years, I am still making much healthier food choices than I did three years ago.  The dietary information I gleaned from the program has proved to be invaluable to me.

Yes, the first two weeks of the diet are very difficult, but well worth the effort.  I couldn't believe that I no longer had cravings for sweets, when I had the biggest sweet tooth of anyone I knew!  It took some commitment and hard work to continue the diet, but was easy because there were no special foods to buy.  The hardest part was that most everything I ate I had to eat from scratch, but the foods were not hard to make.

There were plenty of helps available to me at low or no cost.  I took advantage of the website, and internet support groups that were free to join.  I was able to successfully follow the diet by buying the initial book that described the diet plan, a couple of the books that were available including cook books, and the website and internet support groups.  The support groups were helpful to me, especially in providing recipes that fit into the South Beach Diet plan.

The biggest thing I needed to be successful in this diet was the desire and will power to stay on the diet.  As with any diet, you have to have your mind set on doing it.  This diet will not work if you do not stick with it or cheat now and then, especially in the first month or two.  You may get away with it later in the diet, but at the beginning you will not be successful if you do not stick to the plan very closely.

One thing to remember about South Beach is that it is not a no carb, fat diet, it is a HEALTHY carb and fat diet.  It teaches you which carbs and fats to eat that are better for you so that you can make healthier food choices.  I definitely would recommend this diet to anyone who is interested in finding a healthy way to eat.  As well as the fact that you learn how what you eat affects your blood sugar levels (whether you have diabetic problems or not) and how your blood sugar levels affect your body, and specifically your weight.
