I'm a diabetic (type II) and my nutritionist suggested that I look into the South Beach Diet. I also had a baby a year and a half ago and have been having trouble getting the extra weight off. I was always a solid (and healthy) size 8, but now I was a size 12 and hating it.
He told me I could skip the first phase and try to eat the way phase 2 and 3 are suggested. So I bought the book and read it cover to cover. I realized that I DID eat like Phase 2 and 3 already so I thought, well maybe I can do Phase 1 for the 2 weeks as suggested see what happens. So I did.
I lost 7 pounds in those 2 weeks. I felt really good. I followed their suggestions and made sure to always have the right foods on hand (this is KEY) - because hunger without the right ingredients immediately on hand won't work. After the 1st week I was pretty much over eating raw veges, so I looked up lots of different green veggie recipes. It's been 2 weeks since I stopped and Im still slowly and steadily losing weight. I don't have carb cravings, have basically curbed the carbs to weekends only and even then it's just a little. And I don't miss them. I have always liked whole wheat products, so that helps too.
I ate a lot of things that I really like to eat but haven't for one reason or another - fish, veges, less meat, more eggs, salads, etc.... I bought the Quick & Easy recipe book and used recipes there (which are really good although they may need a little tweaking here and there). I was not hungry, drank lots of water and I'm down to a size 10.
There's no magic, no smoke and mirrors. Just good guidance, will power and the desire to like what I see in the mirror.
