I'm in the middle of the last available Southern Vampire Series novel (at this time) and this series has been one that I have had a hard time putting down. I tried reading the first novel years ago and had a hard time getting into it but after seeing the new show True Blood on HBO I gained a new interest in reading the series again and haven't looked back since.
I didn't care for Sookie a lot in the first couple of novels but as I've been reading more and more I'm really starting to like her. She is simple but she has a little bit of sass that really makes her likable and sometimes the character breaks out and says something that literally has me laughing out loud.
As a fan of vampire romance novels in general I find that as far as graphic intimate scenes go the Southern Vampire Series is a fantastic medium to all the extremes out there in the genre. I read Twilight and since it's geared to teens it's a bit chaste. I read the Anita Blake books and while they start out timid in this department that just get all out crazy and sex seems to be the main focus at this point (I haven't read the last one available one at this time). The Southern Vampire Series doesn't stray away from sex scenes but they aren't a main focus and they add to the plot versus just being thrown in for the sake of it.
The only real con is that I do find the series a bit predictable from time to time. There have been a few plot points that I've seen coming and that was a bit disappointing.
Overall, it's a series you don't want to over think but just really have fun getting to know the characters and going on Sookie's adventures with her. She's a fun protagonist who isn't over the top (yet, take note Laurell K. Hamilton) and has her faults just like the rest of us. I'm from the mid west and I also love the southern location and the people and even the accents - the books make me feel right at home in Sookie's world.
