To the Point

The problem isn't new but the technology to fix it seems to be new - at least new to us. The problem was that our house has an open floor plan meaning my husband's office and our living room are connected. I got used to reading the closed caption wording but sometimes my reading was slower than the words on the screen.

In comes wireless headphones. I tried out a pair of Radio Shack brand headphones at our daughter and son-in-law's but my husband ended up buying me the Sony Infrared Cordless Headphones MDR-IF240RK.

A Closer View: The features

The Sony Infrared Cordless Headphones

  • come with a transmitter. The transmitter is placed near the television and comes with an AC power adapter.
  • come with a connecting cord. The box says that the connection to the TV, Audio, or PC equipment is easy. It probably is. For some reason it took us awhile to figure out what plugs went into what holes.
  • a range of 24 feet depending on the angle of your head.
  • will last for 60 hours using regular batteries.
  • will last for 35 hours using the rechargeable battery. I have no idea why anyone would use anything but the rechargeable battery.

Pros

  • I can watch television while my husband works.
  • The sound quality is excellent.
  • There is an off/on switch on one earpiece.
  • There is a volume control on that same ear piece.
  • I have used the Sony Infrared Cordless Headphones for many hours and have not charged them yet.
  • When I switch the headphones on a light comes on so I don't forget to turn the switch off.

Cons

  • This is perhaps not true of everyone but there is not a lot of room between the transmitter and our television. This means when I do recharge the Sony Infrared Cordless Headphones I'll have to do a little bit of jiggling to get them situated.
  • They are not comfortable when lying down. Having said that I do lie down on them. They are sturdy and adjustable via a spring type feature that adjusts to my head. The inside of the ears have padding but it is the hard outside plastic that is uncomfortable.
  • If anything gets in the way such as a dog who decides to climb aboard for kisses the transmitter will be blocked and you won't hear anything. That's not really a con - just the way this technology works but be aware there's nothing wrong with your Sony Infrared Cordless Headphones!

Jo's Viewpoint

If I had been paying attention when my husband ordered my headphones I may have realized that a different type of headphone (ear buds for example, though I find those really uncomfortable) might be better for lying down on my side. Still I love these and for $50.00 they are terrific. They make a great gift.

These sound terrific. I am often up late with insomnia and I am afraid I am making too much noise with the TV on.

I need these badly because I have to have the TV fairly loud and my hubby can't sleep well when I watch and he's TRYING to sleep. But I know they're expensive.

I remember you asking about wireless headphones... good to know you got 'em.
