When it comes to DVD Players, some people want the flashy brand that can do 100 different things, and others want a simple machine that will play the DVD as easily as possible.  The Sony DVP-NS55P is one of the latter, built with the simple premise that it would provide a quality picture from the DVD, and do so with an ease of use that could make this DVD player suitable for kids.  Right out of the box, you notice that there isn't a lot to this DVD player, as it weighs a mere 6 pounds, and isn't much more than an inch thick at its width.  This gives you an unobtrusive electronics device that can tuck away into a cabinet, or sit on a shelf without taking up valuable real estate.  There aren't a lot of buttons to have to worry about either, as the front limits itself to the play/stop buttons, a power button, the open/close button, and a toggle to go back or forward on a DVD.  The display presents a little bit more, showing the time and track/chapter count for the DVD.

For most of the control of this DVD player, it is easiest to use the remote control, from which you can do just about anything you would want with a DVD.  This includes of course the basic functions of play, stop, FF, REW, pause, skip, open/close, and the power button just to name a few.  The selling point of this DVD player isn't the ability to do spectacular things with the player or the remote though, but rather to play any DVD, whether it be brand new or well worn, and get a crisp, clear picture each time.  One of the selling points of this DVD player by Sony, is that it will deliver excellent picture and sound quality, even if the DVD you are using is damaged.  This way you can use rentals from places like Netflix or Blockbuster frequently, and still come away pleased with the overall presentation.  It does this through its precision cinema progressive (PCP) system that detects images at a pixel level, and basically puts them back together as an image for you.  Instead of just scanning the images, it recreates them for your screen, and does so quite well.  This helps the DVD player to also play CD's; even ones that are full of photographs or MP3 songs.

The ability of this DVD player to play the various types of formats helps to lengthen its spectrum of usability, and combining that with the great picture quality, really makes this a user friendly device.  This little DVD player is what we have at work, and through more than a year of use, and many different condition DVD's, the player has kept working at peak performance levels.  It's very simple to hook up to the television, just as easy to operate using only the remote control, and it hasn't needed any maintenance in the time we have had it.  This one is a metallic silver color, which goes well with the Sony Television here, and presents a slightly "snazzy" appearance for the entertainment center.  If you are looking for a DVD player that is simple to use and you don't require all the bells and whistles that some of them have now, this is a great option because of its affordability of less than $75.00.
