I loved this camera for years.

When I first bought this camera, I would have given it an 8 or 9. I loved it dearly, but I was only a semi-professional photographer. The camera was incredibly lightweight and easy to carry around. It had a small, easy to handle size that fit easily in a purse. The Carl Zeiss lens was much better than most lenses on point-and-shoot cameras. Though this camera was not really point-and-shoot. I believe it is in the category "SLR-like". Though it does not have a single lens reflector, it does operate more like an SLR digital camera than a point and shoot digital camera. Pictures taken with this camera got into two art shows so even though it does not shoot in RAW format, with a little skill and practice it still creates professional quality prints. I also appreciated being able to use any double aa batteries in a pinch, in case I forgot to charge the special batteries that came with the camera.

Takes great outdoors and close-up portraits.

Depending on the lighting and distance of the subject, some photos may be grainy. I love my Sony Cybershot DSC-H7 though. Everyone always asks me what kind of camera I have because it takes nice quality pictures.

Your pictures will look professional - even if you're not!

Easy to use right out of the box - just got this in October 2007 and already my pix are looking better than ever.  I especially like the "face finder" feature - when you have someone in your sights and click the picture, the background is kind of hazy, so your main subject stands out. I take lots of nature photos - wildlife, etc., and the 15x zoom is the best!

Great camera for the novice shooter.

I am actually a college student majoring in photography and this camera really helped in my digital class. Lets face it, everything is going digital, so it helps to know. HOWEVER, it really didn't meet my needs when it comes to the "PRO" arena. First, when I got the camera I really didn't like the shape of it. It sounds vain, but it really isn't. I guess I just feel that camera shapes have been basically the same for so long for a reason. I like the SLR look, even if it's digital. I guess sony feels they need it to look "modern" for people to take it seriously. It also hangs really poorly on your neck. The lens is so heavy that it points directly downward, twisting the strap all funky. The heavy lens barrel also makes me worry about dropping the camera (which I'll admit, I do often). What do you think is going to hit first? Another problem I had was with the macro capabilities. The macro only works when the lens is at wide angle. This causes such distortion in the photo to the point of an almost fisheye effect. Fisheye is nice if you want fisheye. If not, it's a pain in the butt. It also gives the look of immensity to such small objects. As many who work in wide angle know, objects in the foreground and background have greater apparent difference in scale than they would have. Thought I like this effect usually in art, it did not work for many of my shots. Other than the distortion, the photos were crisp and clear and highly detailed. It also gets very close to the items, so close you almost touch it with the lens. I also don't like the Sony "elitist" system when it comes to memory sticks. You have to get the sony kind. I have an external drive that takes compactflash cards, but my sony sticks don't fit! I later got a sony laptop that you could plug the sticks right into, which was very handy. I wish this camera took another form of memory cards. Some of the great things about this camera are: *It had high Megapixels for the time and the price! *Auto and manual options and all combinations in between. You have to keep some kind of control! *auto and manual white balance - this you can't get on a film camera -- no more filters! *Battery life. I once saw a chart that showed the battery life of some other digital cameras. Paltry in comparison! I do recommend getting an extra one, though. *A very easy to use camera, especially for a novice. Okay, one more complaint, more for ALL digital camera manufacturers, not just Sony. Why the 16 MB cards or sticks? You know this is not enough! I don't think I have even used the 16 MB stick mine came with ever! What a waste of money. I would rather have nothing come with it and make the camera a little cheaper. Or have a larger size stick and have the camera be more expensive!

Awesome digital quality!

I just recently purchased my sony and I am loving every bit of it! My previous camera did not take close up shots well at all and you had to hold super steady or the picture would be blurry. Not with my sony cybershot! I have no complaints! It also has a great slide show feature as well as voice recorded video!

Great bang for the buck in quality, ease of use and features.

I have been using digital cameras for about five years. I researched several brands before buying the Sony. This camera literally takes sharp, high resolution pictures with little more than a push of the shutter button. Movement by the user, light conditions, subject motion, back light, low light among others are simoultaniously adjusted for the shot. If the user wishes to push the speed or other setting manually the camera can be taken a step further for more advanced photographers and even better quality can be realized in the shots. For the money, this is the best digital camera on market for the amature.

Sony makes great cameras!

This is my second Sony camera.  My first camera was the Sony Mavica which I loved but it was definitely time to upgrade.  I'm enjoying the higher megapixels and zoom as well as the duo pro memory versus the pocket CD memory the Mavica used.  I am having a little trouble with red eye but there are manual settings I haven't yet had the opportunity to take advantage of that may well cure that.  The camera has a sports setting which will take a series of rapid shots which I really like because we attend sporting events.  The camera comes with a lens hood that I've experimented with.  It does seem to help in certain settings, however, if you get it on incorrectly, you do get shadows in your photos.  Sony needs to work on this so that a person can quickly add the hood when they need to as it can often take 2-3 tries to get it placed properly.  Otherwise, great all around camera.

Great Camera, Great Pictures

I really enjoy this camera. I have had it since May of 2007 and have already taken over two thousand pictures with it. I love to go out for a drive and take pictures so I need an affordable camera within my budget to capture the best pictures I can. Included in my review are a few photographs from my website. I own these photographs so they are not in violation of any copyright. I am sharing them here because I believe they show more clearly than words how great this camera is. For someone who is familiar with digital cameras I would say that the learning curve for this camera is a few hours of dedicated use. For someone new to the digital camera world, take this camera out a few times before taking it on a trip to make sure you get the hang of all the features. I use a 4 GB memory card where I can store over 1200 photos (great for extended trips away from my computer) and I carry two batteries to make sure my camera is never dead. Battery life varies from 200 to 300 shots depending on how often you review your photos and how long you have the LCD running.
