Quick View

PestChaser Commercial Electronic Rodent Repeller PC600 is supposed to run rodents off without cruelty. Not only didn't it run them off, I honestly believed it drew mice to it. Stay FAR away from this unit. It doesn't work as promised and I have proof.

Full Story

I am terrified of mice - living, dead, in cages, outside, inside, and especially, in my bedroom! We have an older drafty home with some openings where mice can get in and apparently one - or dear Lord more - did just that.

As much as I am scared of mice, I don't like traps. They are disgusting on every level. I don't like poisons because I have other animals plus, mice go away and die IN MY HOUSE!

The answer was to get some sort of device that drove rodents out without actually killing them. But which one? After looking over a few choices, we settled on the PestChaser Commercial Electronic Rodent Repeller PC600. For one, this one is supposed to be more powerful than common household repellants and for another, it had a much bigger range than the others which I figured could only be a good thing.

Well, I used this unit for three weeks before I had absolute proof that it just didn't work.

The Unit

This unit is about 3 ¼ x 3 1/4 x 2 inches. These are not huge but they do cover a second outlet the way my outlets are set up in my room. Still, a small price to pay to sleep peacefully.

The unit is square and ivory colored with what looks like a wire speaker in the center. It comes with a set of screws which you can use to secure the thing into a wall but we didn't do that. The plug is in the back of the unit and the unit sits flush against the outlet.

There is no on or off button. The minute you plug the unit it, it is supposed to emit an inaudible, very high pitched sound that rats and mice can hear but that household pets and people can't.

The unit comes with a 90 day money back guarantee and a three year limited warranty. It costs about $30.00-$35.00 per unit which is higher than most similar units but, to be sure mice are far, far away, I didn't care how much it cost.

My Use

I plugged the unit into an outlet and was not happy that it covered a second outlet since we only have a few in our room. However, it was worth losing an outlet as far as I was concerned. You must realize that I am not just somewhat afraid of mice, I am absolutely terrified of them and it wasn't helping that my kids were telling me that I sleep with my mouth open and I might wake up with a mouse in it. ACK!

So, I plugged the unit in and almost immediately, my sons said they could hear it. I have high frequency hearing loss and can't hear normal high frequencies let alone ones made not to be heard but both kids insisted they could hear the sound. Oh well, they would have to live with it.

That night I went to sleep, completely convinced that my mouse problem was over. A week passed. I didn't hear anything shuffling around or any weird sounds at night so I was elated with the unit. It never got hot and never caused a problem. It was a miracle! A painless way to rid my home of mice!

Then one night I was sleeping when I heard some sounds. I popped up and turned on the light and my cat was pawing a mouse around. She was toying with this thing about four feet from me and only a couple feet from the PetChaser unit.

After I was released from the ward ...

OK, I didn't get that hysterical but close. I woke my husband up and screamed like I was being murdered. My sons came running in and everyone was laughing at me because of my reaction. The mouse was escorted out - alive but shook up - by my husband.

I left the unit on and thought maybe it was just a fluke. Maybe the mouse was actually brought upstairs by the cat. Maybe he was running away from the dreaded sound when the cat caught him.

A few weeks passed and I again woke to the sound of shuffling. I woke up my husband and he said it was pretty obvious that we had to do more than just plug in some box.

Two nights later, the same cat caught another mouse in my room. This was too much for me and good proof that the unit I invested in didn't do a thing to run mice off.

How disappointing to pay a fairly high cost for a pest repellent unit only to have the mice come out rather than run away!

The unit did NOTHING to run off rodents. If anything, they seemed drawn to the thing and that made my cat's job so much easier. Before the unit, my cat had only caught one mouse in her eight years and that was in the basement.

I tossed the unit out and never looked back.

It gave me a false sense of security and caused me to lose sleep and nearly need shock treatment to restart my heart after seeing my cat with a mouse in her mouth in my room.

My Viewpoint

Shame on Sonic Technology! They claim this unit works for 10 years and will chase all rodents - mice, rats, whatever - away without hurting or killing them and it is perfectly inaudible to people and other animals.

None of those claims are true!

I have absolutely no confidence in this unit and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

1 star for this pest repellent. I am all for humane ways of ridding my home of pests but this one wasn't very humane TO ME. It caused me a lot of stress and a few panic attacks which I certainly didn't need.

In response to Jolie's comment from May 7, 2007 at 3:22PM:

We had glue traps in our apt. when I was in college. One night I came home to find the mouse was stuck by his head on this glue trap. Of course I was alone and it was right in my path. This poor mouse was letting out a God awful screech. I was mortified and had to try and fall asleep that night which was nearly impossible. I ended up putting on my earmuffs and the strength of that evenings drinks allowed me to pass out. My friends still make fun of the whole earmuff idea, but I'm still traumatized by that incident. No more glue traps for this girl!

That's terrible. It never seems these electronic repelers work. I agree with Jolie. At my old work we put these glue houses down but nobody wanted to check to see if it worked. Haha.

I recall a device working-- from many years ago-- that is literally a glue surface. If the mouse walks over it, it gets stuck. I had a relative that worked for the city, and this was the only thing that worked. It is pretty cruel given that the mouse has a heart attack trying to get off, but it really stops them....

I laughed when I saw the picture of the mouse. LOL, I am shocked that you even had the courage to post that. ;) Nice review. I apologize that your mouse fears make me laugh. Sorry for forcing my hamster on you too! :/

Great review Patty. At least the piece of junk I bought had a nightlight. Didn't work any better, but at least we could see the mice. Rudi

My personal view is there is nothing you can do humane or inhumane to run off mice. We had a terrible problem with them at a printing company where I worked. We did the traps and peanut butter routine, and there were literally several every morning lying dead in the traps. I refused to go in the art department until someone else would dispose of them. Yet, every morning, I'd have mouse droppings on my desk. Eventually they tried d-con, but the mice grew fond of that apparently, as it didn't get rid of them, and instead they just left blue/green droppings. A humane way that actually worked would be terrific.

We have something like this - well it is this but I swear I think it works. I don't know who makes it but we don't have mice in the basement anymore -not for years. Could be a coincidence?? Nice job on the review:) jo
