I am always making plates to send home with guests after parties or to send with my family for lunches. When I saw the Solo To Go Plates and Lids in the store I was pretty excited, thinking that the days of paper plates, aluminum foil and never-to-be-seen-again Tupperware were over. The fact that the plates are microwaveable was bonus and I didn't hesitate to bring them home. However, before I even sent the first plate out of the house I was re-thinking my purchase.
The Good
Solo To Go Microwaveable Deep Dish Plates and Lids comes in a package of 5 plates and lids. The plates are black and according to the package, are a good 8.94" X 10.18" in size - lots of room. The lids are clear and designed to snap on and give a "tight leak proof seal". There are handles on both sides of the plate which allow you to take the plate out of the microwave without burning your fingers.
The Bad
Before I starting filling plates, I decided to take a good look at the plates and lids. Good thing - these lids were designed by the same guy that came up with the childproof caps. You have to snap the lid on and then rotate it until you hear a "pop", indicating the lid has been sealed correctly. The problem was, I could snap the lid on but edge of the plate wasn't smooth and getting the lid to turn was next to impossible. After playing a while I did finally get the hang of it and as I filled and snapped and turned and sealed, I felt quite proud of myself as I made my little "care packages".
The Ugly
The plates I had put together for my sister never even made it out of the driveway before one of the lids failed, 2 plates cracked and my sister was wearing Swedish meatballs and gravy. Maybe I didn't get the lid on as well as I had thought, but that still doesn't excuse the fact that the plates themselves failed. There were not overloaded, just full and they cracked right down the middle. If those plates had just come out of the microwave and that had happened, my sister could have been seriously burned. Another plate I sent home with my parents had the lid leak. Again, maybe it was my fault but I did hear the "pop".
Cost and Availability
$2.69 for a package of 5 plates and lids or about $0.53 each. In my eyes, that's fine for occasionally sending home leftovers but a bit much for everyday use.
The Bottom Line
Save your money. Solo To Go Deep Dish Plates are a good idea and something that I can see a real place for in the market, but the flimsy construction and the cost don't impress me.
