Soka University of America or SUA is a small, private university in Aliso Viejo, California. Less than 15 minutes from the beach and within sight of the Santa Ana Moutains, SUA has an exquisite beauty to its campus and the students.
SUA has both a four-year liberal arts undergraduate program and a two-year graduate program for a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language.
I am currently a third-year student in the liberal arts undergraduate program. As an SUA undergrad student, I am required to study abroad one semester in another country. Next year, I'm going to Japan and find myself extremely grateful to SUA for the opportunity and its educational curriculumn.
The program, with emphasis on its study abroad experience, strive to emphasize how we students can explore the multifacets of knowledge of our world. I've been taking Japanese for three years and find that I'm learning more in depth about the language and culture everyday.
I've always really admired my peers, both those at SUA now and those who have graduated. My roomate, for example, is from India and we have become close through our exchange of dialogues about cutlure and education. Almost 50% of students at SUA are international and the students from the United States come from over 30 states and territories. I feel grateful that I am immeresed in such a cutlurally rich environment: its a perfect opportunity for the educational growth of a student.
Besides the spacious rooms, outstanding facilities (such as an Olympic-size pool), and gourmet food, I treasure SUA's mission, "to foster a steady stream of global citizens committed to living a contributive life." The mission and idelas of peace, human rights, and the sanctity of life of SUA are what make the univerrsity live up to its name SOKA: to create value. I find that the environment encourages students beyond strictly finding a job to strive to contributive something of value to society. The message is both empowering and profound.
