I bought the So Smart! First Words DVD two months ago when my son was 10 months old.  Since his vocabulary only consists of: da da, I thought this DVD would help him learn those precious first words.  The covers says that it is for babies 9-36 months old.

Me, my husband and my son all gathered on the couch and watched this DVD together.  Well, I should say we watch about 5 minutes of it together.  So Smart! First Words DVD is so painstakingly slow and boring, there's no wonder my son was bored.  I understand that little ones have a small attention span, but this DVD even lost my attention.

The DVD involves words like: truck, boat, cup, keys and flower.  There is a picture of the word on the screen and we all say the word together.  Well, the narrator's voice is monotone and boring and the pace of the DVD is so slow, I don't know how a baby is supposed to stay engaged.  My son was interested for the first couple minutes and then starts playing with his toys.

The So Smart! First Words DVD has a 30 minute running time and sells for $16.98 on their website, but luckily, I paid $3.99 at Ross.

The Scoop!

I have watched this DVD several times with my son and he doesn't like it - nor do I for that matter.  There has got to be a more entertaining DVD out there.

In response to GigiandAdonai's comment from Mar 3, 2009 at 3:09PM:

I know that his attention spam is severely limited right now, but this DVD really is boring! There are pauses in the movie that literally seem like 15 seconds of silence!

Typically a child your age isn't going to have the attention span for anything continuous over five minutes. His age is enraptured by sounds and lights. Don't sweat the small stuff--he will learn his first words and you won't care that he didn't get them off the TV ;+)
