Snopes  —

Ugh!  I got one of those annoying emails today from a friend.  You know the ones, BEWARE OF THE XXX VIRUS!  DO NOT OPEN ANY EMAILS WITH XXX SUBJECT LINE OR YOUR ENTIRE HARDDRIVE WILL BE DELETED INSTANTLY!!!  Or how about NEVER SHOP AT XXX STORE AGAIN, THEY SUPPORT (INSERT RIDICULOUS RUMOR HERE).  C'mon people PUH-LEASE, are you guys still believing this crap!?!?

The kind person who sent me the email today (my wonderfully naive Aunt) got a reply.  Well actually, I 'replied to all'.  Boy did she catch me on a bad day.  Usually I just delete without even reading them, but I was feeling rather feisty today and decided to take matters into my own hands.  So I used the handy little 'reply to all' button found in Outlook and let everyone know exactly what a bunch of bologna the whole thing was.  I'm certain all 50+ people on the list didn't need to see the reply, but I had a point to prove dang it!  I politely responded and let her know that the email was indeed a hoax and informed everyone where I found out the information re: the fake email, I also included a link to the information on Snopes.com

Which brings me to...

Snopes.com!  What a wonderful site.  I've been using Snopes for a few years and found that it has debunked about 99% of the email warnings/rumors/virus alerts circulating the net.  I have now resorted to sending the link of that particular rumor to whomever was silly enough to send the email.

If there's an email being passed around, more than likely you will find it's origins on Snopes.  It's a great site to check out and even more fun when you make people realize just how silly some of these emails actually are.  If you haven't been there, please stop by and take a look.  If you don't then your computer will be instantly infected with the moronic virus that will cause it to disintergrate right before your very eyes!!! *Poof*

In response to KOOKEE's comment from Aug 3, 2008 at 5:51PM:

Seems you take things way too seriously. Lighten up, life is short. Thanks for the laugh though. :-)

Stick with your own city....and my own kind huh? You sound like a charming individual. I appreciate your opinion and your recommendations have been dutifully noted.

WOW! I don't know anyone who would open or BELIEVE an email these days that said .....send to 20 people and get a million bucks. Although snopes has been discredited lately for some of their non-investigated postings that ended up being incorrect [the michelle obama thesis, for example] it appears that some folks still need much help with common sense. So, I guess you should keep snoping. [in the meantime....research "snopes"...you'll change your mind].
oh...by the way......Naperville is quite a distance from Chicago.
please don't tell anyone you are from Chicago....if you use snopes.
It's embarassing. Just stick with your own city....which is NOT Chicago.

Ahh yes I saw that one too. You would think by now people would just assume they are fake until proven real!

Some of those emails are sure nutty. I don't open them - if I can help it. I did get caught on one about the government banning "Touched by an Angel" and a request to write the FCC. I wrote them straightaway (kidding).
