I'm a tv baby. The tv is on in my apartment all the time. Half the time I'm not even watching, just keeping it on for background noise. That's what happens when you grow up in a noisy house with lots of family, and end up having no kids.
I'm also working on getting healthier, and the fact that they've installed a gym right in my apartment building makes this all the easier. All I have to do is take the elevator down tot he lobby and the gym is right there. Luckily, the folks who set up the gym really thought it through. Instead of installing one tv, permanently tuned to MSNBC (as is the case at so many gyms I've gone to), they've set up the gym with machines -bikes, treadmills, ellipticals, stairmasters - that each have a built-in television. The treadmills they've installed are Smooth 9.45 TV Treadmills. Private tv, with basic cable, that I can watch and listen to on my headphones, as I do my daily 30 minutes of fat-burning/cardio!
The Smooth 9.45 TV Treadmill is the nicest treadmill I've used. It's really easy to choose a program and get started. The entire front rail is a pulse sensor, so there's no need to clip something to my thumb. The read-outs are big and easy to see. The machine tells you when you've completed 50% of your planned workout. The surface area is nice and wide, giving event he largest person plenty of room to move. The movement is smooth and steady, and incline is automated. There are two shelf spaces for keys, towel, water bottle, etc. Best of all, the 15" tv has a great picture and sound, and isis set up for cable. No more having to hear other people's music or conversations! No more pulsing techno music (something else I've experienced at gyms.)
My routine has become: get home from work, change into workout clothes and head to the gym. Once I get a treadmill, I set myself up comfortably, hook my headphones up, turn the tv on to TruTv, and then proceed to do a hardcore 30 minute workout as I watch one true crime show or another. The time flies right by. At the end of my workout, the machine gives me a summary ("Average heart rate 132, peak heart rate 150, 28 minutes in the cardio zone....") In the past, I found it difficult to do more than 15 minutes on the treadmill - mostly because I found it so boring.
These machines are really, really expensive, because they're marketed for commercial use. So, no, I'm not suggesting people go out and buy one of these. On the other hand, why not suggest them to the manager at your gym or heath club? Great machines that make exercise easier and more fun to get through.
