Traveling through the South is a treat. The people are friendly and the food is excellent. Since my folks came from Franklin and Vance Counties of North Carolina we visit there a lot. Generally we stay in Henderson and visit from there to all the relatives. One night we struck upon a new restaurant opened in Henderson in October of 2004, called Smithfield's. Being from the South I know good barbeque made with vinegar and spices as is made in Eastern North Carolina. That's the kind Smithfield's makes.
Smithfield's is a chain, but only in North Carolina to the East. They have been in business since 1964, a chain for 25 years and lays claim to being the largest BBQ chain in the state.
The first time we went to Smithfield's, I ordered the combo platter. Although, the food was incredible, it was much more than I could handle, as it came with fried chicken, barbeque pork, hushpuppies and 2 sides, for which I had cole slaw and French fries. I prefer my barbeque on a platter, so I order the large platter with baked beans and cole slaw, it also comes with hushpuppies. My husband prefers his in a sandwich then he eats my baked beans. Everything is delicious. I love their hushpuppies as you can taste the onion and they aren't dry. The fried chicken is delicious, but I get the barbeque since I can't find it like that very many places. The ice tea is excellent as well and they keep refilling it for you. It is very sweet, but you can actually taste the tea. When we leave there we get it refilled to take with us to keep us alert. It works.
You can buy Smithfield's barbeque and sides to take home, which we do if we have the ice chest with us. They also have gallons of barbeque sauce for sale. If you wanted enough food for a party, they would prepare it for you.
We got their Brunswick stew a couple of times to bring home. It was really delicious. Plenty of meat and thick with vegetables, seasoned just right.
Alright, I wrote my review and I'm getting hungry for Smithfield's. Unfortunately, we aren't planning a trip down that way for a while. We are waiting for the 7th grandchild to make an appearance here at the end of October.

Yum. Brunswick stew. That is a popular one here - but for church dinners. I don't know of any local restaurants that serve it. Sad I know.

I have to agree - I was just talking to someone about how friendly the people in the south and west (until Calif) mostly north west are so friendly! Jo
