Having been very disappointed too many times with high end cosmetics, I've been able to restrain myself quite well lately. But a few weeks ago I found myself watching QVC and dialing the phone to order Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof eyeliner. I am totally happy using my Avon Glimmersticks but could not leave well enough alone and placed the Smashbox order.
What happened is that the QVC hostess presenting the product appealed to my retro side. That side of me that remembers the 70s and 80s when we melted our eyeliner with a lighter before applying it; when we applied it to the inner rim of our eyes for that super defined look. Those of you under 35 years old probably have no idea what I'm talking about but the rest of us... you know what I mean.
So after seeing Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof eyeliner applied to the eyes of the lovely models I had to have it. The set I bought from QVC came with a small pot of gel eyeliner in navy blue. It also comes in black, bronze, and dark brown, but the dark blue intrigued me and was a departure from the black and brown shades I typically use. It also came with a brush called the Arched Liner Brush. Normally the gel and the brush are sold separately but QVC packaged them together with a discount.
I had to practice a bit to get this eyeliner applied correctly so that I achieved a nice clean line. The gel is quite soft so it is easy to get a bit of it applied to the thin brush and onto my skin. Once applied the eyeliner dries very quickly and is pretty much budgeproof and waterproof. When I wash my face at night the eyeliner stays put until I remove it with makeup remover or cleanser. It does not come off on my hand if I should rub my eyes.
Applying it to the inner rim of my eye was a little more tricky though as the skin there is more moist. Therefore I had to apply two coats of it there in order to get the darkness I like. I bought this eyeliner specifically to line the inner rim so I was really looking forward to applying it and having it stay put all day long but by lunch time the liner wore off unevenly and it looked pretty ugly. There were patches of eyeliner that wore off and were stuck in the inner corner of my eye. So although it stays put on my outer lids, not so much on the inner lids which really bums me out.
The Verdict - 3 stars. Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof eyeliner is pretty good but it is outrageously expensive and does not stay put on the inner rim of my eye so I can only give it 3 stars. I still recommend it for the outer lids but dont count on it for lasting color on the inner lids.
