I bought this Slyvania from Big Lots during their Black Friday sale for $45 so I could create DVDs directly from my DV Camcorder without having to load the crap on my slow computer to do it. It's a very Basic and likely early DVR which was probably way overpriced upon release and now likely on liquidation sale or clearance, if you can even find it as I'm sure it's discontinued. Unfortunately the documentation and box lies as it states it supports both DVD- and DVD+ type media, this is completely false and likely was one of the ones who did this early on and were busted for it. It ONLY supports DVD- media and does NOT support DVD+ media, so make sure to get your DVD- media. Additionally you don't have any cool features to customize the DVD so ALL you get is a list of recorded videos on a blue screen.
So if you don't care for all that snazzy artisticy customization of your DVDs and just want to get your Videos onto DVD from your TIVO, S Video, or A/V connectable device then this is a cheap alternative for you. I bought 2 myself and gave one to my Brother in law who was looking to burn his old VHS tapes from tapings of my nieces onto DVD, this is the only way to do it unless you want to pay some shop who will do the same a boat load of money to do it. I know there's one around where I live that charges like $20 a DVD to do this, why when you can easily do it yourself.
You can also pause the recording, but there's NO Way to erase unless you have DVD-RW media; with the DVD-R media it's basically what you record is what you get. It also cuts the Recordings off at it's limit so there's NO way to record your way out of being able to finalize a disk. So if you want to record and walk away without caring about it running over an extra 10 minutes to the end of the DVD it will automatically stop for you. You can also set it up as a DVR like TIVO where it records based on a set time, but you'll want to make sure the Satellite or Cable is turned on and tuned to the station you want to record to.
This DVR is NOT Slingbox compatible unfortunately so you can't run it with Slingmedia. Sorry I would upload a picture
