Slumdog Millionaire —

Dev Patel and Freida Pinto play in Slumdog Millionaire, an intense and brutally honest film.

Plot: A young man, Jamal (Patel), appears on the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire."  When this young man from the slums keeps advancing, he is brought in for some harsh "questioning" by police.  It goes through the life of Jamal and his brother who were orphaned at a young age.  Together with an orphaned girl (Pinto) they go from childhood, to teenagers and finally to young adults.

Why I like it: I love watching movies that portray other cultures and don't sugar coat anything.  I loved the transition of this film and how they showed how Jamal knew all the answers; just amazing editing.  The whole storyline of Slumdog Millionaire is open, truthful, informative and sad.  It's an amazingly accurate portrayal of life in the slums and the history that goes with it.

Without spoiling the film, there were several parts in the film where I was sure someone was going to die.  After watching so many movies that have the same outcome you just expect it to happen in every movie.  Slumdog Millionaire was not that type of film and I think all those things would have taken away from the story of this film.  I liked the transition and story that went with each new "age group" and I really like the tourism scene.  I love that they stuck a Bollywood song/dance sequence at the end.

Nominated for 10 Oscars, Slumdog Millionaire has already sparked the interest of the critics and fans alike.  I highly recommend this film to anyone who appreciates the open view of another culture.

Nice review! I like that you didn't give anything away. All too often I read something that I wouldn't have wanted to know in a movie or book review, but this was well done.
