What a terrific excuse for a snack!

4 star rating

cutting back on calories, not always virtuous, a chocolate nut, a snack attacker
Pros

satisfies sweet cravings well, helpful with between-meal urges, two quite different but appealing bars, good consistencies, no vitamin-y aftertaste

Cons
overpriced so wait for a sale or coupon

Slim-Fast Optima Snack Bars are all the excuse I need for a mid-afternoon snack.  I have the packages of two flavors right here in front of me.  They are Chocolate Peanut Nougat and Chocolate Chip Muffin Bar.  In a great feat of gastronomic magic, one package will soon disappear.
Optima Chocolate Peanut Nougat is a little guy.  It weighs just one ounce, has 120 calories, 4g Total Fat (2.5 sat), 70 mg Sodium, 20g Total Carbs (1g fiber), and 1g Protein.  Touted especially on its label are the 15 vitamins and minerals it contains.
Chocolate Peanut Nougat is chewy without challenging your fillings.  A layer of peanuts in carmel sits atop the nougat which reminds me of a Three Musketeers filling with heft.  I enjoy this bar because it simply tastes like candy.  It does contain some of my cravings, though, so it's purpose is realized.
Chocolate Chip Muffin Bar weighs in at 1.19oz and is generally a little more substantial than the Peanut NougatChocolate Chip Muffin is what I'd call a cereal bar, and its label especially touts "made with whole grains".  This "muffin" has 140 calories, 6g Total Fat (1g sat), 170mg Sodium, 20g Total Carbs (2g fiber), and 1g Protein.
The Chocolate Chip Muffin Bar is a chunky, oat-y bar with a soft bite.  The fact that it's a little on the dry side is negligible if you quick-dip it in your glass of non-fat milk or tea or coffee, etc.  I believe this bar forestalls hunger a little longer.  Its chocolate chips, like the milk-chocolate coating on the Nougat bar, help quell this chocoholic's urges for a reasonably good time, but certainly no longer than an hour-and-a-half.

I lucked out and got my Optima Snack Bars (the peanut and nougat ones) at Big Lots for less than half price. They had boxes and boxes and boxes of them, almost all in that flavor. Otherwise, price would be a no-no for me. They're not worth full price.

As "they" say: "We are of one accord."

I agree these taste very good, but so expensive!

Okay, another great review! I can't remember now what flavor I tried but I'm definitely going to go for that Chocolate Chip Muffin Bar. Sounds like a real winner!
