The Select Comfort Sleep Number bed has an inner core of air that can be individually adjusted for just the right amount of support for you and your sleep partner. A compressor under the bed causes more or less air to enter the inner core according to the number (from 0 to 100) that you or your partner select.
We have owned a Sleep Number bed for about 7 years. The amazing thing is that "soft" or low numbers still give support to the back, legs, head, etc. "Firm" or high numbers make the bed more rigid without loosing that support for the lumbar region of the back and for other parts of the body at rest that wouldn't be touched by a conventional firm mattress.
My husband says that I seem to sleep deeper with the Sleep Number bed than I ever had before. I no longer toss around to find a comfortable position. My hips don't hurt in the morning from excessive pressure while sleeping on my side. I am able to sleep on my back without morning backache. Since the bed conforms to your body shape, small depressions may appear. (These go away when you fully inflate the bed to 100 and then deflate to your personal sleep number.) My cat finds the depressions quite comfy for her naps.
Since the bed is adjustable, you can change your sleep number with the push of a botton to meet your body's current comfort/support needs. Friends who also have a Sleep Number bed say that there is a ridge down the middle of the bed. My husband and I have similar sleep numbers and have not noticed a ridge. One down-side to the sleep number: once you become accustomed to a truly comfortable and supportive bed you will never want to sleep on a conventional mattress again. Is that so bad?
