READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY A SLEEP NUMBER BED!!    My husband and I have owned one since 2004. The last few months I have become ill with constant sinus problems and severe allergy symptoms. So severe that it has affected my ability to work at times and I have had to miss work as a result. My husband was recently diagnosed with Asthma from our doctor and has been taking medicine to treat it. None of this made sense until today. I have been doing my own research into why we've had these symptoms and today I found the answer: I happened upon a website that talked about mold being a notorious problem with the Sleep Number bed. I ran upstairs and pulled back the foam mat and there it was on both sides of the bed - MOLD!!!  Sleep Number has known about this problem and has purposely not made consumers aware of it. They say that they have solved the problem on the beds made since 2005 by treating them with an anti-microbial agent. When I tried to get information on what chemicals are used in this treatment, I was told by a supervisor they could not disclose this information but was assured it was non-toxic. I wanted to see the documentation to support this and they said they would only provide it if I sent a request in writing, which I have. But here's the point: Why would you buy a bed from a company that would knowingly withhold information from consumers that could potentially seriously affect their health? It's tantamount to the tobacco industry knowingly withholding the debilitating effects of smoking. And doesn't it raise the question that if they would refuse to disclose this information for the health of their consumers, what else are they withholding? What exactly is in the supposedly non-toxic anti-microbial treatment that they are now putting on their beds to prevent mold? Do you think they would tell you if it was toxic?

The moisture doesn't come from the environment, it comes from sweat that is absorbed by the mattress and then gets trapped inside. The truth is that all mattresses will have mold inside them to some extent, it is just that the Select Comfort is one of the only ones where you can take it apart and actually see it. Because of the rubber air bladders and the plastic box spring, the problem is slightly worse in a Select Comfort than in a normal bed. A humid environment will make things worse, but to call the owner negligent is ridiculous.

Are you responders serious? You must be paid by Select Comfort. Nobody told me about the mold problem at point of purchase or in the documentation. I don't have to do this air out with my regular matresses. I live in a dry area and even have a sealed allergy cover on the bed and still it got mold and mildew. This tells me something from the factory caused this issue. Our home has air conditioning and we closely monitor the humidity levels in the house because both my wife and son have severe allergies. I called Sleep Number and they are replacing the whole mattress and the inside free of charge.

Mold comes from moister. If you had this problem you have more. Check your base boards, carpet, clothes, bathroom, ect.. Try to clean your house and maintain it. If this is your problem with the bed, then I cleaning habits and home maintance. Mold comes from a trashy home. Really, look at your living habbits, must be pretty bad....

You live in Florida, you get mosquitoes, alligators and mold. You bought mattress model that comes with with a foam insert cover and failed to regularly air it out in direct sunlight. This is Select Comfort's fault???
