I bought this saw for building a couple of bookshelves, and it has worked well both for those bookshelves and for several projects I have worked on since then. My saw has a blade guard that moves out of the way as the saw is moved across the wood. It will occasionally snag when it first contacts the wood and is supposed to begin pushing out of the way, but it does work great at protecting your hands. The saw has two notches on the front part of the guide, so it can be a bit tricky to figure out which notch is the proper guide for cutting a straight line. I had the option of getting one that had a laser to help guide a straight line. I opted to pay less and skip the laser, and it has worked well. It can adjust to cut angles, and it can cut down to a depth of about two and a half inches. The lever to tighten or loosen the depth of the cut can be a bit stiff to adjust, but other than that, this has been a great saw.
