Singer Sewing Machine —

Several years ago, I purchased a brand-new Singer portable sewing machine. The model number is 5417C. I still find it difficult to thread the machine, so I actually avoid using it and do much of my mending and patching by hand. I have to review the instructions for threading the machine every time I take it out.

This model cost a couple of hundred dollars and has not needed any service, which is very much in its favor, as I am not near a service center. It is attractive and I very much like the feature of removable parts beneath the needle for good access to the seam. There is also a handy built-in tray for pins, bobbins, etc. The buttonhole feature works well.

I would recommend this machine to experienced seamstresses, but not to a beginner.
