I was thrilled to find Simply Potatoes hash browns. They use real potatoes. They are not frozen. They really taste like real potatoes. But, they're much quicker and easier to make.
I loved the regular Simply Potatoes so much that I bought a bag of the southwestern style. I love southwestern food and love spicy foods. I was anticipating really loving these potatoes.
When I poured these potatoes in the skillet, I noticed that they really did not look much like hash browns. They were not shoestrings. They were potato crumbs. You know those little pieces in the bottom of the French fry container at McDonald's? Yeah. Kind of like that. Someone really went heavy on the shredder.
Well, I wasn't too worried. I cut potatoes in various ways. Doesn't seem to make a huge hill of beans. Fries can be shoestring or steak thick. They all taste good.
When I tried to flip these, they were a mess though. Seriously. I can flip some fried food. These did not want to flip. The yummy browned part stuck to the pan. I even added a bit more oil to no avail. This just made the potatoes kind of greasy as well as stuck to the bottom of the pan and becoming more ground up looking the more I messed with them.
Looks aren't everything though the "looks" did worry the boys. One boy wanted to know why the potatoes looked chewed up. The other wanted to know what those "red and green things" were in the potatoes. I can't explain the chewed up part, the red and green are peppers I'd be pretty sure.
As luck would have it, I got a phone call right as we were sitting down to dinner. Isn't that just typical?
The boys ate while I was on the phone. When I got off and before I ate, I asked about the Simply Poatoes.
"Pretty hot," was the response.
I love hot, so I thought that sounded good. But, in fact, these were not the hot I like. They were kind of bitter hot and just too much hot for potatoes. Season anything that much, and you don't have a clue what you're eating. Might as well have been liver.
I definately love Simply Potatoes, but I'll stick with the regular hash browns. They cook up nice, look great, and taste terrific. I don't know what they did to those Southwestern Simply Poatoes, but I hope they stop it soon. Folks may not try the regular if they get ahold of the Southwestern. They were pretty much a disaster here.
