Simply Potatoes Mashed Potatoes —

A few weeks ago, I wrote a review about Shedd's Country Crock Homestyle Mashed Potatoes.  My theory was that mashed potatoes as part of a sensible diet plan are not necessarily a bad thing.  After outlining the nutritional information for both Country Crock and homemade mashed potatoes, I suggested that we might all be better off just making a big pot of our own potatoes and storing some for use later.  It may be that some of us haven't got around to doing that yet (I suspect our numbers are legion!) and meanwhile I've found something else that really is nearly as good as homemade:  Simply Potatoes Mashed Potatoes manufactured by Northern Star Company of Minneapolis.  About two and a half cups of fine mashed potatoes are packaged in a black microwaveable tub and the product is delicious.

STATS:

A half a cup is considered to be a serving which contains 100 calories with 40 calories from fat.  There are four grams total fat, two and a half grams saturated fat, zero trans fat, 10 mg. cholesterol, 440 mg. sodium, 14 grams total carbs, two grams dietary fiber, one gram sugars, two grams protein, 4% (D.V.) Calcium and 2% Iron.

TASTE TIP:

I still think homemade mashed potatoes are the best for us but Simply Potatoes Mashed Potatoes come close in both taste and quality and are the potatoes I served with my Perdue Whole Seasoned Roaster in a Bag dinner.

Works great as long as my older children are not home, then nothing by homemade as I have to make BUNCHES or they fight over the mashed taters.

(-: I usually make them from scratch. But it's just the younger guy and me now, so I think we'll do more of these. It really is a lot of work to make mashed potatoes from scratch for one or two people.

I'm so glad you enjoyed them, Cyndi! I think as commercial mashed potatoes go, they are the best and I'm usually too lazy to make my own. And I live by myself so I guess I'm REALLY getting to be lazy, huh!

We had some the night before last. They really are good. Very quick and easy. Love that.

I have tried different mashed potato products and I agree that homemade tastes so much better but after reading your review I will see my store carries it. Thanks!

I bet your husband really does make good potatoes. Men are wonderful cooks. My Dad used to amaze me with the stuff he could cook. I think they tend to be more fearless and inclined to "think outside the box". Is your husband "The Bard"? He tried to help me once with a printing problem I was having and told me to reinstall my print drivers. And I just sat there, all helpless, thinking "You mean I have those?!"

I know it souinds crazy, but I could eat mashed potatoes all alone for lunch or dinner and it would be fine with me. Of course, it wouldn't be a balanced diet!

Oh yes, they have tons of different kinds of Simply Potatoes. I just checked the info on another kind of Simply Potatoes where they list the types and yes, they make Garlic Mashed Potatoes. I forget what I paid for my Simply items as I nearly always get things on sale. Really, these are good commercial potatoes.

Made me hungry. :>

Do you know if these are sold with different flavors? I sometimes like a touch of garlic in them.

My hubby makes the best homemade mashed potatoes, but these sound like a good option when time is limited. It sounds much better than those awful dehydrated Potato Buds my mom used to buy when I was a kid (sorry, mom) :)
