In 1999, Sarah Michelle Gellar (now Printz) took a break from her Buffy character to make a silly little chick flick, Simply Irresistible. I don't even remember seeing the trailer, but that didn't stop my hubby from picking up the DVD at the flea market as a $2 "I think she might like this one" movie. One rainy Saturday afternoon we sat down to see what it was all about. Gellar's co-star is Sean Patrick Flannery - I knew him as the Young Indiana Jones.

The story concerns "the girl" who is about to lose her family restaurant because she can't cook, and her only customers are elderly, just-like-family patrons. Her best friend is her sous-chef. "The boy" is a man-about-town who dumps his ladies after the third date. His confidant is his personal assistant who acts more like a motherly sister. The two principles are brought together via a fairy godfather and his familiar - the ever present crab. Add a large dose of magic and silliness, and you have a cute chick-flick.

Do I care that there were problems with the script and flow of this story? NO.
Do I care if the lighting and CGI could have been better? NO.
Do I care if this is fantasy and whimsy? NO.
Do I care if SMG's wardrobe was very odd at times? NO.
I do care that it was an enjoyable 2hrs of escapism, and that my hubby sat through it.
I do care that it was fun and silly, and I won't forget the guys thinking about sex every 4 minutes and adjusting their belts or hands in the pockets when thinking of sex. [Actually, I thought that guys think about sex every 2.38 minutes, but that might be teen-age boys]

My DVD does not have any extras besides one trailer, scene selection and captioning (important for me!). There is a soundtrack of 12 songs available from this movie.

Will I watch it again? Yes. The main themes are finding love and sensual sex, not sex that is raw and physical for half the world to cover their eyes over. Kisses and hugs and clothes are kept on. It's more about falling in love and keeping that feeling. I can watch it with anyone and not feel embarrassed, though personally I would not show it to anyone younger than 16 - Middle schoolers have enough problems understanding the birds and the bees.

I thought the same thing! I didn't know the kitchen was so sexy. Doesn't seem that way on Hell's Kitchen, does it?

I am not sure I would like the movie, but enjoyed your review! I might have to check it out anyway. It is kind of funny how many movies based in restaurants they have made since then!

He watched it all the way through and laughed. He called it light-hearted fluff, so that means he like it.

Enjoyed your review. My guy watches chick flicks with me too. Did your hubby like it?
