If you know a redneck then you know we will try anything once, twice if it works and will try to find new uses for anything. Well Simple Green is the cleaning cousin to Duct Tape, yup you heard me I called them related.

What it does

My Dad always used gasoline to clean everything he took off a car all the while with a cigarette in his mouth. Well he also used Simple Green that a guy at work gave him by the gallon, they used it in 55 gallon drums in the motor pool at GSA. But he never used it for under the hood things just to clean the boat to get the fishy smell out of it. It worked great on the dried fish blood and worms that got squished on the bottom of the boat.

One day while tearing apart a carburetor I grabbed the Simple Green instead of the gas. Besides the only way to get gas from Dad's was to siphon it from the car as the lawnmower gas was mixed with oil and I hated gas on my hands anyway for long periods as it dried my skin and made getting cut real easy on me. The Simple Green worked fantastic to clean all the gunk (varnish)out of the carburetor. So then I grabbed a brush and started cleaning the whole engine, it worked very good and the smell was a lot better than gas fumes any day.

When my second daughter was born we used bleach to put in the diaper pail (my Mom-in-laws cure all for diaper smell) but it wasn't mine. Urine contains ammonia and when you mix bleach and ammonia you get a toxic gas that can kill ( I didn't know that at first but when I found out we never did that again). So once I found out I figured the strong smell of Simple Green would solve 2 problems, it would kill the strong odor from the diaper pail and also help the diapers get cleaner once washed. It worked like a charm and from that day I started finding more uses for this Irish Liquid...lol ( I am part Irish part redneck).

I started using it to clean my vinyl top on my car, I would mix it with water to wash my work truck. Heck back in the 80's you could buy a 35 gallon barrel of it for about $20 from the supply store, so thats how I bought it. I did plumbing work there for a while and the wax from setting toilets was hard to get off your hands, not with Simple Green. I used it for a hand cleaner for a long time. It also helped hide the smell of being a plumber and kept my truck smelling better.

It cuts grease very well and even caked on grease and road grime are no match for this stuff. I have cleaned everything on a cars from greasy parts, vinyl tops, tires to getting the glue junk where bumper stickers come off. I have even used it to scrub down the side of a storage shed that had dirt, soot and bird droppings all over it so I could paint it.

Bottom Line

Simple green works on many things it cuts grease fairly easy and is not toxic like using gas or bleach would be. It is not expensive and cleans well except it will streak glass or mirrors, unless you dilute it very well. I have even used it to wash a load of greasy clothes after working on a vehicle. It is a great all around multi-purpose cleaner. Besides that it is such a pretty green color and has a smell that you won't soon forget.

Simple Green has to be the most versatile cleaner I have ever used and has not failed me yet. I have used it outside and it does not harm grass in any way. I always hose down the area when I use it so that may help in that respect. This Redneck recommends Simple Green for every cleaning job you have.
