Our old mattress was damaged by the moving company when we relocated. Luckily, we were insured, and the pay-out was just just under $2500. Enough to buy a good mattress, right? When we got to the mattress store, there were plenty of mattresses for $2500 and under, but not a single one we felt really good about. My partner and I both have back injuries, and a good bed is important to us. The only mattresses we really felt good about were, unfortunately, Simmon's top-of-the-line, ridiculously expensive Beautyrest Black range. The particular model we liked, the Roslyn, had a sticker price of just under $5,000. Yes, there are actually people who shell out five grand for a mattress! We are not among those people. We're more the haggling type. And haggle we did. Believe it or not, we talked the saleman down to $2300, and got him to arrange free delivery, and throw in two king-sized pillows. My guess is, those stores don't make very many $2300 sales in a week. So, the first lesson is: you can haggle at a mattress store, just as you would at a car dealership. Seriously- never pay the sticker price for a bed.

On to the mattress: Oh. My. God. You know what? If I'd had $5,000 to shell out for a bed? I probably would have, for the Roslyn. I have never had a better night's sleep. It's wonderfully firm, and yet cushy. There's no rollover - that is; you can't feel it when your partner tosses and turns. I wake up every morning feeling refreshed, and I no longer wake up achey.

You can read all about the great materials used to make this mattress (cashmere, among other things) on the Simmons website, but I don't really care what it's made of. I just care that it's like sleeping on cloud.

Buy this bed! Just don't let anyone talk you into thinking the sticker price is anything more than a point from which to start your haggling.

Hello again! Thanks for all the info and advice. We ended up with the Simmons Beautyrest Black Viola (I think) instead of the Roslyn. So far, so good. We've had it just under a week. No pillow top on this version, but firm enough and still comfy, as you describe. Hopefully, we won't have any problems with the thing. We bought at Sleep Train and they matched Macy's price, less 5% as is their price matching policy. Ended up with about $800 off SleepTrain's price. Still expensive, but we're hoping it will last for a long time. Definitely shop around, look for sales, and haggle! I'm not much for the strong-arm negotiating tactics, but this was easy. I may have even been able to get a lower price, but I felt like I made the salesman do plenty of work--was at the store 3 times, with the kids once, and spent a lot of time testing the mattresses and asking questions. I feel like I got a pretty fair deal...as long as the mattress holds up!

I still love my bed as much as ever. It's every bit as firm and comfy today as the day we bought it. I don't think the haggling thing would work at Macy's. We bought ours from a mattress sotre - I think it was either Sleep Train or Sleepy's - I tend to think it was Sleep Train. Just remind yourself of one thing when haggling: there will be *plenty* of places where you can spend your money on a mattress...but there's only one of you. Salesmen don't sell big ticket items like this every day, so they need you way more than you need them. Keep that in mind, and even say it out loud if you need to. I once got a great deal on a used car by telling the dealer "I'm buying a Subaru this week. If not from you, then from someone else. It doesn't really make a difference to *me* who I buy it from...but I know it makes a difference to *you."

I am considering this bed and liked your review. Are you still happy with it? I'm deciding between this one and the Pembroke. What kind of store were you able to haggle on the price with? Macy's sells this bed and I can't imagine them doing that for me. Can you help?

In response to ANEWDAY's comment from Jan 21, 2008 at 8:42PM:

ANEWDAY- Your mattress and our mattress (Roslyn) must have been manufactured on the same day. We have the same problem after one hour of laying in the bed -- on the day it was delivered. Fighting like hell to send it back. My husband is only 160 lbs. He even went back to the store we bought it at the next day and tried out the sample bed to make sure he wasn't crazy. The mattresses are defective.

What you describe is really unfortunate. Of course, I can only speak of my own experience with the bed, itself, and with the dealer - both of which have been excellent. We've had the bed for a year or so now, and I love it as much as I did on the day we first tried it. While I don't doubt your experience, I stand by my recommendation of this bed, based on my own experience.

Guess you were the lucky one! I also purchased the Roslyn by Simmons. After only 3 month my husbands side of the bed had a dip that he had to roll out of to get out of the bed! Good luck trying to get Simmons to do anything about it also!! The store I purchased the Simmons mattress from told me that a Simmons Rep had to come out to measure the dip. Simmons requires a 1 1/2 dip. The problem was that it was not a dip in the pillowtop it was a defect in the springs, you had to lay on the bed to FEEL the sink hole. LONG story short Simmons as a Class action law suit against them and if you do your homework on the website you will see that they do not back thier product.......They do not have nor care about customer service!!! I did get my money back from the company that I purchased it from, but only after I assured them that I was going to become a FREE salesperson for their company.....I was going to show up EVERY day to help customers with their selection for a mattress and who better than I who owed a SIMMONS!! They gave me my money back as they did not want me telling anyone how SIMMONS DOES NOT BACK THEIR PRODUCT NOR CARE WITH THERE CUSTOMERS!!!!

I'm pretty sure they don't even have $5000 mattresses around here (-: Really, I want to go check now. Thanks for the great review. That's good to let folks know they can negotiate on mattress prices.

Great review. And people wonder how they do the "1 cent" box spring sale. Rudi
