I have one daughter who has been mostly on formula because of various reasons.
Our hospital gave us Similac advance to use, We chose this one because we trusted the Similac name, the hospital mentioned it first over the other choices, and we knew that it contained ARA and DHA ... ingredients added to infant formulas to help promote healthy brain development.
The idea behind these added ingredients is to provide formula milk that is similar to breast milk. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid) are currently stated to support the rapid brain and eye development in babies as they develop. This particular formula claims to "support mental and visual development" with these added ingredients, something important to parents. The addition of these ingredients as well is recommended by our local pediatricians in the area. Armed with that knowledge, and knowing we had tried a formula with DHA and ARA with our other daughter, we felt comfortable in starting this baby on Similac Advance Infant Formula With Iron.
We received the Similac Advance Infant Formula With Iron formula first in the hospital in ready to feed bottles. These are a wonderful thing to use in terms of ease - just screw on a disposable nipple and you are ready to go! However, they are pricey and we didn't want to pay for them outside of the hospital setting - so we decided to purchase the Ready to Feed jugs at $7.00 a jug. with no help from family and recovering from a C-Section, that we'd pay a little more to have the formula already prepared for us. This meant the formula was already prepared - you simply pour into the bottles and feed!
This also comes as a powdered formula that you have to mix yourself. For the long term, powdered is often the most cost effective. We generally use powdered formula for the long term.
We elected to stay with Similac Advance Infant Formula With Iron because our daughter did so well on this formula in the hospital. She ate great, and was immediately on 4 - 5 hour feedings. The formula seemed to fill her up and she never spit up!
We even get coupons at our doctors office when we go for sick visit/ well baby visit and we can use them to save some money
