Similac Isomil Advanced Soy Based Formula —

Our son was born 2 months early and after a 17-day stay in the NICU, our peditrician told us to use name brand formula. Being first time parents, we flocked to Similac. They were the sponsors of the year for the hospital diaper bags, so why not?

We started our son on the regular milk and he was just fussy as ever. We thought it was normal. How could we know? About two months later, we were exhausted and visiting my parents when we were advised to try a soy formula. We weren't too thrilled, but we tried it.

Within a WEEK our son's colic had vanished. The GERD was gone and he was a VERY happy baby. It was a miracle worker.

I can't really say there are general pros and cons to this, as normally. There are a few basic pros:

1) Easy to purchase:  generally carried by most grocery stores and supermarkets. You may have varying costs, but most carry it. Even in small towns, you most likely will find Isomil and milk based Similac.

2) Easy to make: One scoop for every two ounces. Easy enough!

3) Easy for baby to digest (usually): It's not recommended by peditricians for nothing! For some kids, it's just the thing they need to get over the colic hump. Always check with your peditirician first, but remember that you know that baby better than anyone. If something doesn't feel right, you need to bring it up.

4) Available in bulk: This is a big one. Sam's Club and Costco don't carry ALL formula in bulk. At our Costco they only carry Similac, and they only carry milk-based and soy-based.

Cons are generally based on expectations and the child. Some babies need something else, and it may not "cure" the problem with your baby. This isn't like a skin cleaning product that promises to get rid of your acne or spider veins. All babies are different and MAY require something different. It should ALWAYS be recommended to speak with a qualified doctor before making any major changes.

In the end, all name-brand formula is going to be costly. All formula is going to be based on the basic premise of mixing (scoop and shake!). However, this formula worked for us and it worked for us VERY well.
