Silver Comet Trail —

The Silver Comet Trail is part of the Rails to Trail Program and it runs from the Alabama/Georgia border where it meets the Chief Ladiga Trail to Smyrna, Georgia in Cobb County. The plan is for it to continue to downtown Atlanta where it will meet the area covered by the Beltline project, a development program that will increase greenspaces as well as transportation, sidewalks and other planning features in the city. The Silver Comet is a multi-use trail where I have seen walkers, runners, cyclists, wheelchairs, arm peddle bikes, handicapped bikes, recumbent bikes and skaters, just about anything that is not motorized.

I visit the Covered Bridge area, a historic district with a working one-lane historic covered bridge. An area affectionately referred to as Sminings.  A combination of the cities of Smyrna and Vinnings.  I am familiar with the area four miles on either side of the parking lot nearest the bridge. Walking to the west I cross a bridge over a stream and soon come to a short lit tunnel. This is the quieter direction and also the direction of the Silver Comet Depot, a store that rents bikes, sells icecream and has public restrooms beside a large parking lot. The other direction is also nice, but it has a little more road noise from surrounding traffic.

The ground is fairly level because the path is built in a train bed, and trail users are most often friendly. Some days almost every greets me. This is a very popular segment of the trail. I have gone out on some nasty weather days when I thought surely I was the only one crazy enough to be out, but I've never been completely alone.

To day I was serenaded with the best song ever. A tiny cyclist with pink training wheels burst into song.

If you're happy and you know it rde your bike, clap, clap
If you're happy and you know it clap your hands, clap, clap
If you're happy and you know it then your face will surely show it.....
Come on Daddy, You can catch up with me....Daddy, Daddy, Daddy
If you're happy and you know it ...

Safety/Comfort
Trail rules are simple common curtesy and they are posted. Hours are daylight. I recommend the same safety rules you would follow elsewhere. Take someone with you, let someone know where you are. All of thise things. Cell phone coverage is good. There are emergency phones near roadway intersections. There are occasional doggy clean up bag dispensers. On the eight mile stretch that I have walked there are three locations with public restrooms aproximately every two miles, but I expect they are less dense in less traveled areas.

there are a few trails around Wichita but I have to drive 30 miles from here to use them ;( So I ride around my neighborhood. Riding is a great way to get exercise! Ron
