Silpada Designs Fine Sterling Silver Jewelry —

To the Point

My next door neighbor had a Silpada party. Silpada is the name of a jewelry company and in the style of Tupperware offers home parties. Kelly, the repressentative, was very nice and very professional. I bought a pair of earrings that are heavy. She can't bring all her items because there are too many so much of what I bought was via the catalogue. Had I known how heavy the earrings are I wouldn't have bought them.

A Closer View

I decided to have my own party with Kelly. She sent out the invitations. Other than making coffee and having some food I did nothing. She set up her table and took over. There was no hard sell. In fact there was no sell. She was there to answer questions. There is no question the items looked beautiful.

Depending on how much my guests bought depended on how much free jewelry I got. The person having a party gets 30% of the retail sales in free jewelry. I was able to order two pairs of earrings for my daughters, a ring I gave to my daughter, and two bracelets and a necklace for myself.

I ran into problems with three of the items. The ones I bought are sterling silver. Some of the items have brass on them. One of the bracelets has brass interwoven with silver. Within months the brass started to change colors. Within weeks the bracelet with a heart developed black spots on the heart. I called the number Kelly told me to call and there wasn't an enthusiastic "Oh of course we'll send you a new one." I did get a new one, which has been fine, but I think exchanging the first one should have been easier.

The sterling silver necklace which was beautiful broke. I may have worn it twice. If I were handy I could perhaps have fixed it but I'm not and gave it away to someone who does beading. Silpada's jewelry ranges from very inexpensive like $15.00 to hundreds of dollars.

I would not buy from Silpada again. The jewelry looks beautiful but in my experience it doesn't hold up.

LOL Thanks:) The Silpada thing is crazy but it's gotten a lot of hits. BTW, I have gone into WalMart and actually bought something recently that I reviewed a Yoga top. I was looking all over for something which I can't remember and finally went in there. Unfortunately when we travel we use WM a lot because they are everywhere!! Happy holidays, Jo

Oh, and I totally support your Walmart boycott. It kills me that it's the only superstore we have within reasonable driving distance. We're getting a Target soon...

Nice review, Jo, and I got a HUGE kick out of reading some of the recent comments. You go with your "hard to satisfy" self (insert sarcastic eye roll here). I had a nut job make some crazy comments on one of my cat food reviews, too. Isn't it amazing what some people will get SOOO passionate about? Incidently, I found your review extremely helpful and unbiased. :) Have a great weekend!

At the time that I had spots on my heart I was told that they would make an exception but it had been over 3 months. So if Silpada has a 100% guarantee I wasn't told about it. I am going to test it out because another piece I got - well the brass on it is wearing away. If they make good on this I will change my rating. Jo

Silpada does have 100% guarantee for any jewelry that breaks...there is no time limit...don't believe this review. And it does need to occasionally be polished but most pieces take a few seconds and are good as new....use a silver polishing cloth only, though.

Hello, I have never deemed any comments on my reviews inappropriate. I've been writing online for 8 1/2 years and have developed a thick skin; however, I may report this because you have attacked my character. Before I do I want to address a few things you said.

1. I rarely wear cologne or perfume - rarely.
2. I have been boycotting Wal-Mart for years due to their treatment of human beings.
3. I have many very nice pieces of jewelry and have never complained about any until Silpada. I stand by my review.

I have never "ruined" any piece of jewelry. I am not a competitor. I do not work for any jewelry company. Why not just write your own review rather than attacking mine?

For those reading this be assured that all my reviews are unbiased. I have nothing to win or lose by writing what I do. If anyone would like to talk to me personally about my experiences with Silpada just leave a comment here with your e-mail and I will get back to you.. Jo

I don't put much weight in her comments. If her pieces developed black spots, she probably sprayed her jewelry with perfume which will eat away at any silver. It's an acid and while silver is a metal, it isn't impervious to the elements. Next time, don't treat it like costume jewelry but like the precious item it is. Also, never spray your pearl jewelry with perfume unless you want them to lose the nacre. After all, they are organic and only have a hardness factor of 2 compared to the diamond at 10. Precious metals, gold, silver, platinum, all require a certain amount of care. Maybe Jo needs to do her accessory shopping at Wal-Mart instead of high-quality, fine jewelry and dispose of it after she has destroyed it.

I think Jo in all areas of her life is a very hard person to satisfy. In case she is unfamiliar, all sterling silver will tarnish and require polishing just like your fancy flatware. I have found Silpada Designs to be very accommodating if and when there is a problem with a piece of jewelry. I am currently attending a school to learn how to make fine jewelry in sterling silver and gold and it is a very labor intensive job. These pieces are not manufactured in some factory. They are hand made by artisans all over the world. Believe me, I charge a lot more than they do for the items I make. Try and go to any department store when an item doesn't live up to your expectations to get it repaired or replaced. Silpada gives a lifetime warranty on all their jewelry. Good luck finding that somewhere else. If she thought the earrings were too heavy, all she had to do is contact her rep and ask to exchange or refund them. She wasn't stuck with them except by her own choice. Jo needs to lighten up or maybe she is a competitor. I have many pieces and love each and every piece. Can't tell you how many compliments I receive all the time. Too many to count.

In response to AlysaV's comment from Feb 7, 2008 at 12:01PM:

Hello AlysaV, I'm thinking about becaoming a rep. I just had a party and got 13 orders. I went to my reps home to finalize my personal jewelry order and saw that she lost a few pieces of her samples. I'll tell her that you know of a girl that had an earring replaced. That is really fabulous. --Joanne

I think it's pretty darn great that they replaced it! My Tiffany's heart bracelet tarnished and got corroded in one spot. To "return" it, I had to pay for my own shipping, PLUS a return/repair fee!
I've had much better luck with Silpada, at better prices than Tiffany's. I won't waste my money there anymore.

I am a sells rep for Silpada and have over 200 pieces and never have had anything break or a return for breakage...Silpada customer service is the best-never a problem for a return if someone wanted another item...Are you sure you haven't bought Premeire jewelry??

Kellieb wrote on Aug 11, 2008 at 2:21PM

Jo should know that every Silpada piece is guaranteed for life and she can get a new bracelet at anytime. You also have 60 days to return or exchange anything that you don't like/is too heavy/doesn't fit. I'm a Rep. and I've never had anything but amazing service
from Silpada. Any Sterling Silver jewlery could break if cared for improperly, so this is not unique to Silpada Designs.

kristentoo wrote on Jul 10, 2008 at 3:39PM

All jewelry breaks from time to time, and especially handmade pieces. silpada definitely doesn't have the market on that. the great thing about them versus other places to buy jewelry is they will replace it for you, even if you bought it five years ago! NO ONE I have found can match that. And I don't understand these people who say Silpada is expensive...what are they comparing it to? It is not costume jewelry you get at target. This is the same stuff you would buy at Tiffany's and Norstroms, and hand them down through generations. Sterling silver is beautiful, is more "in" than gold, and is just as valuable. Definitely worth every penny!

I have a wonderful new company if you love sterling silver jewerly. Check them out at www.roxanne.aurastella.com I became a rep. i love the jewelry so much.

AlysaV wrote on Feb 7, 2008 at 12:01PM

Hi Jo -- that sounds like a weird bad day at Silpada. I am a rep but not a sales-y type of person. I have honestly had nothing but great customer support from them. What I have learned is that sterling (any) gets tarnished very easily if you do not put it away propely. If you keep the jewelry separate from other silver pieces and in a plastic baggie..you wont have black spots. If you shine it up with a cloth real quick, it wont tarnish. Now I know we all dont have time to do this all the time, but it makes a huge difference. p.s. your sales rep is supposed to do the return for you and make it real easy. Please dont give up on silpada. I have had things tarnish and break from Saks fifth Ave and Tiffany too! At least Silpada will replace the items. I even know of a girl that lost an earring and Silpada was nice enough to replace it. You can't say that about too many companies.

I wonder why the representative gave you a number to call regrading returns. It's Silpada's policy that the reps handle the returns.

GeorgeChabot wrote on Nov 22, 2007 at 11:33AM

That's disappointing when things don't hold up.

Buggheart wrote on Nov 21, 2007 at 7:48AM

Oh that's a shame, Jo! Their stuff is really expensive and should hold up better than that. I have a few pieces that I paid way too much for but got sucked into buying at a friend's party.

Fardreamer wrote on Nov 20, 2007 at 2:19PM

Sounds like all that glitters sometimes isn't worth buying.

SpokaneMan wrote on Nov 20, 2007 at 1:42PM

It's too bad the jewelry didn't hold up for you.
