Sicko Review Summary

Sicko is an eye-opening documentary that many reviewers feel makes it's creator, Michael Moore, more likable. An "indictment" on the health care system in the United States, it shows how many Americans are suffering due to a lack of health care. While the film had Michael Moore's usual one-sided, dramatic style, even non-fans of Moore have to admit he makes a good case with Sicko. Comparing Sicko to Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, a few reviewers still believe Moore is twisting the truth to support his claims. As Moore compared the health care system of other countries, including Canada and Cuba, Sicko makes reviewers see how far behind the United States is.

To the Point

I begged you to see Fahrenheit 911.  I begged you to see Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth. I am once again begging you to see Sicko because if you aren’t outraged then you cannot possibly be paying attention.

After watching Sicko I found myself wondering how people can swallow these statements of fiction as factual.  Does anybody wonder how they just sailed into Cuba with no questions, received such great care and were hailed by the fire fighters association?  I am wondering, in a country where the people... review »

Now, before I even begin reviewing this I have to say a few things. Before watching this movie, I had the utmost hatred for Michael Moore. I'd slandered him many, many times while friends were praising him. After watching this movie, I still hate him but I look at him in a new light. Kind of.

Plot: A documentary on the highly profitable American health care industry, comparing it with other nations to see some of the major differences. Also he interviews people who've have some terrible HMO horror stories.

Sicko, compared to Fahrenheit 9/11 or Bowling for Columbine, was much, much better in my...

Michael Moore's controversial documentary about the American healthcare system takes a hard look at the worst of the worst medical hardship stories. From claims denial to patient dumping, from retroactive rejection of coverage to Congressional hearings, Moore makes a damning indictment of for-profit medicine.

For contrast, he takes us on a tour of socialized medicine in Canada, England, France and Cuba. Judging from the documentary content alone, medical care is quick, efficient and caring. Everything we should expect medical care to be, as a human right.

Of course, Canada, England and France all...

This was a very interesting film. Almost makes me want to move to France when you hear about their free daycare, 5 week (minimum!) paid vacation and free college education!  This Michael Moore movie is much less in your face as his last film "Fahrenheit 9/11."  It points out other countries' such as England, France and Cuba's free Universal Healthcare as a basic universal right.  It depicts their doctors as focusing on being preventative rather than waiting until someone has already contributed to making themselves sick or are about to keel over.  Doctors get bonuses if they get their patients... review »

I cannot possibly know how Michael Moore actually managed to get awards from this obvious one sided, politically skewed, fabrication of a "documentary".

Of course our medical insurance problem is an obvious concern for most Americans but this man actually tries to convince his audience that CUBA has a better health care system than in the United States of America! All one has to do is read up on the corrupt Cuban government to realize what a fallacy Michael Moore's so called "facts" really are. He even goes on to make Canada and France seem like a heaven on earth when it comes...

If you're not a fan of Michael Moore's, I doubt there is much I can do to change your mind. But if you're concerned about the state of health care in the U.S. and if you have any issues along those lines as they pertain to possible presidential candidates and the future, this film is a must see. It is thought provoking and a bit frightening and eye opening and what's most important - it has a wonderful sense of humor. Even in the midst of learning something and feeling my stomach tighten into knots of concern at the issues raised and the tactics used, I found myself laughing out loud. In fact,... review »

Sicko is funny, tragic and thought provoking. There must be a better way for American's to receive health care than the system we have now. Many people think this is a documentary about American's who do not have health insurance. Not so. This is a collection of tragic stories about people who have health insurance and how the Health Insurance corporations make money by denying coverage to those they insure.

No matter what you think of Michael Moore, you should see this film. If you disagree then prove him wrong but see the film first. It kills me that people say Mr. Moore is one sided but never...

Another great documentary by Michael Moore. I have been on this side of health care one too many times. A lot of people are ignorant to the fact of how health care works for lower and middle class individuals. I think this movie brought a lot of major issues to light. The way Moore showed the individual and the struggles they had to go through was brillant. I also loved how he challenged you to think outside of the box. The one scene I loved is when he took the boat of people to guantanamo bay. It was interesting to hear how prisoners there received better health care then the average American.... review »

While I would have eventually gotten around to watching this film on my own, I was recently able to watch it in my Sociology class at Boise State University. Some of the things in this film make me honestly feel badly to be an American. I do not like the fact that we have let our government dictate us to the point that they get to decide that we as a country do not need a socialized medical system when so many Americans are suffering due to lack of health care. I had even more of an impact because Mr. Moore was not telling stories about people with no healthcare but about people who had worked... review »

This film was recommended to me by a friend.  He said nothing to me except that I need to see it.  I did.  Keep in mind that I am not a tree-hugger,not a fan of Al Gore, or anything that might connote extreeme liberialism.  That being said, this film will make the viewer sit up straight and think, seriously, about the state of health care in the United States.

I would recommend this film to anyone and everyone.  It is thought-provoking.

This was an interesting take on the socialist view of medicine.  While I do agree that the need for improvement in our healthcare system is needed I don't necessarily agree that this would be the way.  After watching I am not sure I want someone else making my health care decisions.

Michael Moore gives us a peek at the truth about the Health Insurance which we pay
for.  Unfortunately,  most individuals have no idea of the grief they will encounter
when they become ill until it happens to them.  I speak for myself, first.  Uncovering
the real plight  that hard working people suffer with insurance companies takes a
lot of courage.  I applaud Mr. Moore for taking a stand and bringing this very real
problem to the fore front.  Bravo, Mr. Moore.  This work is a masterpiece!  Universal
health care is the answer!

Re: "SICKO"

I'm a 32 year old retail worker.  I've been employed since I could start working at 15.  Through the years, I've worked my butt off, chasing that "more than minimum" dream.  When college is too expensive for a lower income family to afford, and you don't think paying off thousands of dollars worth of loans sounds that appealing, what's there to do, but the best you CAN do?

For me, that's struggling through a lifetime of mind-numbing, laborious low-wage jobs, hoping to finally be noticed and appreciated someday.

So, need I remind you, that these days, most cruddy jobs don't include benefits? ...

I like Michael Moore.  I think he seems like a super caring guy.  I have watched all his documentaries & while yes he probably leans toward his view point you can't change facts.  He could make fun of Pres. Bush in Farenheit 911 because Bush gave him the material to.  I believe the facts to be true in Sicko also & this is why I cried from the beginning to the end of this movie.  It is awful that we live in such a rich country with so many great attributes & yet this kind of thing goes on here.  We are such a generous & big-hearted nation.  Just look at how quickly we rally to help others... review »
