To the Point

I begged you to see Fahrenheit 911.  I begged you to see Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth. I am once again begging you to see Sicko because if you aren’t outraged then you cannot possibly be paying attention.

A Closer View

Michael Moore has put together a 113-minute documentary that made me laugh and cry.  It all started about a year ago when Moore asked people to send him their stories about health care. In a week he got thousands and thousands of letters. Although this movie is an indictment  of our health care system it really goes beyond our broken system. It looks at the people who call themselves Americans and should make these people ashamed at themselves.

We learn that the citizens of Canada, England and France, all of which have socialized medicine, live longer than Americans and have a lower incidence of infant mortality than we do.

We learn that Guantanamo detainees have access to better medical care than the soldiers who guard them and better than so many Americans including the firefighters and EMTs who worked at Ground Zero and are now sick. They’ve been let down. That was especially hard to watch because it is heartbreaking.

We learn that the World Health Organization places the United States number 37 – one spot above Slovania in terms of health care.

We learn that in England doctors get paid more when they make people better; get people to stop smoking and give patients preventative care. This is in stark contrast to the U.S. whose health care system does everything it can to not pay for our illnesses and stamp denied much too often.

This movie will put health care reform back in the mainstream after it was shot down during Clinton’s administration.

Jo's Viewpoint

A must see movie - I do realize that there may be some exaggerations and flaws in some of Moore's reporting. If so I am not aware of them however.

I work in the Health field and guess what my job is? Access Coordinator, which means I get to see all this garbage first hand. The insurance companies are only out for themselves. I happen to work in a great hospital that has different programs for people that cant afford healthcare. But still imagine coming in for a needed procedure and being told that you have to pay 4 grand before you can have the procedure. Just the initial shock is disturbing.
Doctors do turn people away for not having funds to pay for the care and that is pure disregard for the human race. Good thing that of all the Drs that I come across, there is only one that I know of that would consider this.
I did see this movie and I do know that it goes on but until we all stand as one and demand our rights, then I dont see anything changing.
Too bad it took someone like Michael Moore to bring this to peoples attention.

Vincent, like the other two movies I mentioned I left saying to hannasdad (hubby) that the ones seeing the movies are preaching to the choir. Still I think maybe, just maybe this one will be different. This is a health care issue. Surely (said somewhat tongue in cheek) wouldn't people of all persuasions care about their health care? Having said that tongue in cheek I recently met one 27 year old woman (stepson's girlfriend) who is so non-political I doubt she even thinks about it. I agree with Jolie. It is embarrassing. We are already the laughing stock of the world. Albania being the one country that seems to not boo Bush. jo again preaching to the choir since I am well aware that we think alike.

Jo, we (Americans) have long suffered under the delusion that our health care system is the best in the world, and in some respects it is. But it all too often fails the very people it is supposed to be taking care of. I agree with Mr. Moore, health care should not be a for profit venture, period. Our health care system as a whole is broken and no amount of arrogance and hyperbole is going the fix it. I will of course see the movie, but he will be preaching to the choir!
