The Case
Well, after watching Shrek, and with plans to go see Shrek the Third, how could I even think about skipping a viewing of Shrek 2? Answer: I couldn't! I popped the second in the loveable, if ill-tempered, ogre series into my DVD player and sat back for an additional hour and a half of non-stop laughs and enjoyment! And the big green monster delivered yet again!
The Good
The second Shrek has all of the appeal of the first, with more! How could you not love that? The mockery of other children's movies is stronger than ever, the humor is sharper (if that's even possible), the animation is just as great, and the entire voice cast returned in force (with the exception of John Lithgow - poor Farquaad...).
Also, Shrek 2 managed not to fall into the dangerous pit of doom, the pit that other sequels usually plunge to their deaths in: it had an original plot! An original plot for a sequel?! Surely you jest! Nope. It does. And a bunch of great new characters, too! I mean, who could resist the eyes of Puss coupled with the amazing voice of Antonio Banderas? No, you couldn't. Stop lying!
The Bad
Again, it boils down to the crude humor. Crude, but funny. I'll trade in on that action! Nothing else was bad. Oh, except for the remake of Bonnie Tyler's 'Holding Out For A Hero.' That was bad. Like scraping your fingernails across the chalkboard bad. Eeeeewwwww...
The Verdict
Five stars! Shrek 2 serves up a solid sequel that all of us devoted fans can enjoy over and over again, just like the first one!
