Shoot 'Em Up has been on my list of "Have-to-See" movies for a while. I'm a big fan of Clive Owen and a huge fan of Paul Giamatti. When I heard that Owen was going to be in a pure action movie and that Giamatti played the bad guy, I nearly fainted. I had my doubts of course but, they were quelled during the opening scene.

Plot
: Mr. Smith (Clive Owen) rescues a laboring pregnant women and delivers her baby in the midst of a shootout. When the mother is fatally shot, Smith must take on the duty of protecting the baby and finding out why the hitmen wanted the mother and child dead.

Shoot 'Em Up is a nonstop action thriller that has a very noir feel during the non gunfight scenes. The acting and characters are your typical noir type but they have a sense of humor about them. Clive Owen's character, Mr. Smith, is an expert marksman who is infuriated by the smalls things in life. For example, in one scene, a man driving ahead of him is changing lanes without using his blinker. Smith becomes enraged by this and runs him off the road causing him to slam into the back of a parked car. Paul Giamatti's character, Hertz, is a ruthless hitman willing to do anything to eliminate the child. Giamatti is an acting genius in my eyes; brilliant in every role I've scene him play. He pulls off the ruthless bad guy with such precision that it made me wonder why he hasn't been in more roles of the same type. Monica Bellucci also does a great job as the love interest of Mr. Smith.

The real bulk of Shoot 'Em Up is action scenes. I expected there to be a variety of action but, oddly enough, there was only gunfighting. From the very beginning to the very end, the gunfighting just doesn't stop. I thought that with only gunfighting for action scenes that I would be bored by the end but boy was I wrong. I've never seen a movie with so many different types of gun fighting, and each one of them captivated me. Halfway through the movie I somewhat expected to see a death toll counter pop up in the corner of the screen. People were being blown away left and right, i almost couldn't keep up with it. I was stunned at some of the things that Smith was doing to kill the bad guys. There were even times when I literally said out loud "That's unbelievable!" Very few movies have inspired that kind of emotion from me.

If you're looking to see a pure action film with somewhat noir feel, then this is the one for you.  Shoot 'Em Up is definitely one for the action junkies. I will be getting this one when it hits DVD for sure.

I believe you meant to write "should HAVE", not "should OF" in your title description.

A really interesting review - it makes me want to catch this movie, even though I don't usually flock to action films. Sounds fun.

Welcome back!! :) I just read an article that said Paul Giamatti is among the most under-rated actors and I couldnt agree more. I really like him a lot. I want to see anything he is in!!
