I was trying Priceline for a 2 star hotel in Chicago. I don't spend much time in a room. When I travel, I travel. I couldn't get a 2 star for $80 in Chicago, so I thought that if I was putting in $90, I was sure saying I wanted 4 star - not that I expected to get it. I figured I'd go $100 plus and still be in the 2 star range. But, no. Sheraton Chicago Towers must have had some rooms going begging, so I nailed a 4 star for $90. Good deal on that!
The Sheraton Tower is right on the river in Chicago and a couple of blocks from the lake. It's a super location. I guess motel stars are all about location, location, location. This one had that right for sure. It's right in the middle of the action and with a super view.
I get a little anal sometimes and especially when dragging a suitcase, so after I ate some Chicago style pizza, I went to the hotel to make absolutely sure I really did have a room for 3 pm. It was only 1 pm, but they checked me right in. Can't beat that. Two hours early. Put my suitcase away. Take a nap. Back out and looking around.
The room was smallish, but I expected that in a larger city. It was a tad worn like rubbed spots on the coffee table. Nothing major. When I pulled the curtains, wow, it didn't matter. What a view. I could see the river and out across the city. This was floor 18, and it was terrific.
I saw the water on the side table, but I also saw that I would pay $6.95 for a bottle. That's a might high for water coming from North Carolina. I had to look in the refrigerator too. It was packed full as was a drawer above with snacks. Those didn't even have prices, so I'd hate to even guess. Whew. They ought not tempt a foodie like that.
I crawled in the big, king bed. It was very comfortable, and they had loads of pillows (6 or so of various sizes). I can sleep anywhere, but I can definately sleep good on a big bed with lots of soft pillows. This was just the nap. It was quite restful.
When I'd go downstairs, they were always ready to help me, and I do mean ready. I did not have to ask, someone would always ask if they could help. They probably thought I was a chunky rock star or something. Maybe a romance writer. Who knows? They were sure nice at the hotel.
They gave me directions and maps and even little print outs with turn by turn directions. They would have put me in a cab if I'd let them, but I like to walk a city. How else do you really see stuff?
I attended my night party, and when I got back my message light was blinking. I must say that in these parts, that means something has happened - like maybe someone died and called the hotel (not the dead person called - of course). I figured out the message thing to check, and they just wanted to tell me I could check on the TV. OK. Glad no one passed while I was out and about.
I slept pretty good though was hyper with being away from home. Nice bed. I said that. It really was.
The next morning I went to get ice. I hoped they did not charge to borrow the bucket next to the water. I guess I will see on my credit card.
The ice room was very odd. It was a closet that smelled funny and the ice spit out. Also, the plastic bag did not fit the fancy metal bucket, so I eneded up with ice right in the bucket. I hope they washed it. I would think so in a 4 star hotel. They might want to pretty up those ice rooms and get bags that fit, but that's just my opinion.
Before I left I checked about that check out from the TV. I also found I could have had Internet (but not really with no computer with me), but it would have been something like $11.95 per 24 hours. I would have thought that would have come free with a close $200 room.
I checked out the service book as well. I will read absolutely anything even the back of the toothpaste tube. Sheraton Towers will gladly keep your luggage and mail it to you. In fact, they will dry clean all the clothes in there before sending it back - for a charge which is not mentioned.
I can't just take things at face value. I am the type to think on things. I can't help it. I wondered if they dry clean panties. Really now. How strange is that? Maybe they do. Maybe they don't. In any case, I can't even imagine someone going through my suitcase and cleaning all my stuff and mailing the suitcase to me. Heck. I could almost certainly replace everything for less and just leave the suitcase on the curb.
I guess that's a nice service as were all those listed. You could go to Chicago and stay at the Sheraton Towers and not turn a hand to do a single thing. That list is extensive. They will hook you up on everything from getting your hair done to a massage.
I just stayed the night and was gone most of the time, but I did enjoy my room when I was there. I loved the view. I was glad I was close to the things I wanted to see and do. I can't imagine having other people do things (for a price) that I can do for myself. I wouldn't even mind the high priced water if it went to the folks who hauled it up and replaced it. I'd be pretty sure it would go to the Paris Hilton types though, so I passed on high priced water and just left a good tip.
