Shelter Insurance Company has been extremely unfair with my company. In May of 2009, my used car dealership was hit by a drunk driver who was insured through Shelter. The driver, age 19, hit four cars total (at 2:30am on a Thursday morning). Of those four cars, one was considered totalled by a Shelter Insurance claim adjuster. We were told by this Shelter Insurance adjuster that when they total a vehicle (pay off on it), they use examples they get from insurance salvage pools (thats what they go by-according to her). She told us they would offer us $5,300 for our "totalled" car (at first)....

We have been with Shelter for over 20 years and have just recently turned in our first claim. I backed into a vehicle and did very limited damage. I contacted our agent immediately and he was extremely helpful. This claim was handled within 48 hours. I was extremely pleased with the agent and how professional he was about it. He told me that after over 20 years I was due. My rates haven't gone up a dime. The claimant was anything but understanding when I bumped his car. I have had to file two auto insurance claims with Shelter Insurance in the past year and both were handle wonderfully.
The first involved a non insured teenager that made an illegal left turn at a stop light. The teenager hit the passenger door on the driver's side of my car and spun me around. We were both okay. My car suffered approximately $2500 worth of damage and they took care of everything with the exception of the deductible. They were wonderful; they made the entire experience worry free for me and I continue to get updates on their lawsuit with the teenager in order to receive reimbursement...

I use Shelter Insurance for my car & home insurance. Although I don't own a boat or recreational vehicle, I have friends that do and they have coverage with Shelter Insurance as well. I found my local agent to be very friendly and helpful in obtaining insurance. He looked at my previous coverage & matched it with a better price. He explained the difference between Liability only coverage-where someone I hit would be covered, but not my own vehicle-and what many call full coverage but is actually a comprehensive policy where both my vehicle & the other vehicle is covered if I am at fault in an accident....
