Sex and The City - The Movie —

Before I review the movie I have to admit that although I think Sex and the City was a brilliantly written TV show that had great performances, I never really liked the premise. Week after week, under the false pretense of empowering women, the show presented women as panicky squeaky creatures who only care about shoes and men. 4 years later the movie isn't presenting a much different take on the female gender. Women come to NYC for two 'L's announces narrator Carrie Bradshaw: "Labels and Love".

Although it is most likely that mainly fans of the TV show will go see the movie, it begins with a Charlie's Angels like presentation of the four leading characters. Unfortunately this long overture is almost embarrassing to watch. Not only is it badly written and ill performed, but  whether you are a man or a woman, there is something sad about complete and utter vanity when people are in there forties. Patricia Field's wardrobe choices, that looked cool and sexy on the 30 something year old characters of the TV show, look pathetic and clownish on the 4 middle aged husband chasers.

During the first third of the movie, it continues to disappoint until the dramatic arc finally curves and the characters hit a wall. Strangely enough everything improves from that moment on and the remaining 2/3 of the film are actually enjoyable as the characters deal with heartbreaks and relatively realistic emotional battles. The script becomes funny at that point and most of the performances improve significantly from then on (at least the performances of the 4 main female characters; their side kicks - the men - maintain bad acting technique.) Also the wardrobe does not recover and the clothes remain pathetic all the way through.

Another redeeming factor is the cruel comparison repeated all along the script between Los Angeles and New York, as the age old rivalry between the two cultures comes to life via Samatha's relocation to Tinsel Town. Although when coming to think about it, one of the main elements that is mocked about LA - the vanity - is heavily embodied in the behavior of the 4 new york girls (if one is allowed to call 40-50 year old women 'girls').

If you watched the SATC TV show you should go see the movie but just remember to hold tight through the first 1/3 if you want to enjoy it.

Great review, I think I will sit back relax and wait for the second half of the movie, and am really looking forward to seeing it.

So you make your grand appearance. Nice job! Although "that looked cool and sexy on the 30 something year old characters of the TV show, look pathetic and clownish on the 4 middle aged husband chasers." Now, come on!
