Sex and The City - The Movie —

I was never a die-hard fan of Sex and The City when it ran on HBO, but I did watch it and enjoy it some of the time.  After some of the reviews I've read about the movie it seems that your fan status has a lot to do with how much you will or will not enjoy this movie.  While there are some good things to appreciate about Sex and The City: The Movie, there are also some problems that I couldn't overlook.

Good Points

What I appreciated most about Sex and The City was the relationships between the four main characters:  Carrie, Amanda, Samantha, and Charlotte.  This movie displays female bonding at its best, and that's always a good thing.

Sarah Jessica Parker has such an appealing and charismatic personality as Carrie, that you find yourself wanting to be one of her friends.  In spite of all of the superficial shallowness of the materialistic world that she occupies, Parker is not afraid to bare her soul and shed her façade to show us the deep pain she feels at a crucial point in the movie.  She really is a fine actress because she really made me feel Carrie's pain.

Finally, I enjoyed the much-publicized costume changes - the ladies all looked terrific and each outfit was appropriate to the character.  Although I find the whole "label-worship, trend-setting, Manhattan-is-the-best-place-to-live" narcissism a bit childish, I did think that some of the shoes and clothes were like works of art.  I can appreciate that, at least.

Bad Points

In the negative column, the most glaring problem for me was that the script seemed incredibly disjointed.  Charlotte's character isn't given much to do, Samantha has what she wants (but not really),  while Miranda and Steve face a problem that seems to come out of the blue, and that seems out of character for him.  Jennifer Hudson doesn't exactly do a horrible job, but it just feels like she is in a different movie.  The whole "St. Louis - Saint Louise - Louis Vuitton - Meet me in St. Louis" running theme feels contrived, amateurish, and out of place, not to mention unbelievable.

Final Point

Ultimately, Sex and the City: The Movie has its share of chuckles, soap opera angst, redemption, and sexy stilettos.  It also has its share of tedious double entendre jokes, disconnected storylines, and self-important materialism.  Overall, I would recommend it to a friend looking for light entertainment and a little fun.  Just don't expect too much

This review was a miracle -- it told us valuable things about the movie without spoiling the plot for those of us who haven't seen it yet. Kudos to you!
