Sex and The City - The Movie —

I have never watched Sex and the City on TV more that a few times, have never had a Cosmopolitan, and have never even been to New York, yet, I found myself with a need to see the film version. I did the only logical choice; I brought along with me two dedicated fans of the show, my sister and my niece, thinking I'd need them to fill in a few blanks for me, to explain who was who and who had done what.

Even though I had watched the television series just a few times, I knew the basics of who everyone was and what they were up to. I knew that Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) was an author and on again/off again with Mr. Big (Chris Noth). I know Samantha (Kim Cattrall) was sex-crazed, that Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) was an attorney, and that Charlotte (Kristin Davis) was a do-gooder. Of course, faithful viewers of the television series will tell you there's much more to the six seasons of the show than this, but what I found, was that that was really enough to know walking in to see the film version.

As tightly guarded as this plot has been, I don't want to ruin it for anyone at this point, so I'll stick to a few basic points here. Carrie opens the film talking about coming to New York twenty years ago looking for labels and love, and after picking up labels right away, she concentrated on love. Now that she has been living with Mr. Big, she feels she has found love and is now wanting to write about what it's like to have love. Charlotte is living with Smith (Jason Lewis) in Los Angeles, but comes back to the city often to visit the girls. Charlotte and Miranda are both married, and both have children. A new girl joins the cast, an assistant for Carrie (Jennifer Hudson). This helps sept up the in with the new and out with the old thing going on.

Of course, we all know that in life, the love you find either never stays or never stays completely content, and while the four couples go through weddings and breakups, it's really no different than what we experience in our lives. It's through all of this that the film gave me an immediate reason to care about these four central characters. There wasn't anyone in the theater whose heart didn't skip a beat the moment Charlotte looked at a man, held out her hand and shrieked, "Nooo!" This is also the moment in the film when most in the theater started wiping away the tears, and after they started (the tears, not the women), it was difficult to get them to stop.

Not that the whole film was filled with sad moments, as it wasn't. Aside from Carrie's many witticisms, there are also such moments as the girls getting together, and with Charlotte's young daughter in the room, she doesn't want her to hear the word, "sex." They decide to refer to it instead in their conversation as "coloring," and the conversations becomes quite humorous as they discuss how many times a week they color, with Samantha saying she can't color enough, and would color every day of the week if she could.

Despite the fact that there was a young girl in the audience the day I saw Sex and the City in the theater, I really don't think it was appropriate for that age. It's rated R and for good reason, as there is sexual situations and a lot of nudity, including a brief shot of male frontal nudity. That said, it might even be a turnoff to some adults, for that very reason, yet for this adult, I found myself caring and feeling, much more than I thought I would.
