After about 4 years after the television show ended, Sex and The City is back in the form of a theatrical release. Picking up right where the show left off, the movie goes back in to the stories of the four New York City girls, and gives fans new in-sight as to where each of them were heading with their lives. It took a while to get a script ready and for all the girls to sign on to the picture, but in the end, the product is something that fans are going to be quite proud of watching. Staying as true to the show as any movie I have seen do, the Sex and The City film really does ramp up the level of comedy in order to make this theatrical release a success.
For those new to the world of Sex and The City, the 7 season run (season 6 was split in to two parts) of the hit HBO television show really set a tone that would be hard to match. It followed the lives of four single girls in their 30's, trying to make it in the city of New York. It showed their ups and downs in the dating scene, and all of the real-life struggles they had with trying to find "Mr. Right." The show starred Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes. Each of them were interesting on their own accord, and each brought something fun and original to the show.
The movie starts out with a quick re-introduction of the characters, narrated by Carrie (Parker) as she works her way through the development of each of the main characters. Showing some snippets of different (and memorable) events in each of their lives on the show, this serves to bring everyone up to speed, and to fill in the blanks for people that might be new to the franchise. It also helps remind everyone where the show left off 4 years ago, and where the characters were heading at that moment. It sets up the story nicely, and allows them to jump right back into the story of these four New York women who are just out looking for that ultimate happiness. The film itself is the continuing story of whether each gets to find that perfect life.
Much of the film centers around the relationship between Carrie and her beau "Mr. Big" (Chris Noth). It's no surprise that a wedding is in their plans, and most of the other stories become sub-plots early on to this event. That is not to say that it over-shadows the supporting characters, because everyone gets their screen time, but it is something that helps to tie together all of the stories. In doing so it allows the film to explore the relationships that each of the girls has, and fully flush out the character within a 2 1/2 hour time-frame. They did a good job of making sure to give each girl a moment in the spotlight, and there are plenty of moments where the film seeks to pay homage to the show and highlight some of its most memorable moments. Funny, quirky, and feeling, Sex and The City ends up delivering exactly what fans of the show have been looking for, and if you have ever been a fan of the show, it would be easy to say that you will love the movie.
