Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Powder  —

To the Point

Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Powder is non-toxic, biodegradable, has no phosphates (Phosphates can cause algae blooms in lakes that can lead to plants and animals suffocating.) and has no petroleum based cleaners. It is not tested on animals.

A Closer View

I have the 48-ounce box of powder. At home I usually use the liquid detergent. For some reason I bought this. The company claims that this box will do 18 loads which seems to be a close enough estimate. I haven’t finished the box yet.

It costs $6.99 which isn’t much more than name brands though much more than no name detergents. Those may have hazardous chlorine bleach, tThe production of which creates toxins.

The ingredients are: naturally derived cleaning agent (coconut-based surfactants), non-chlorine all color bleach and whitener and non-animal derived enzymes to remove protein and starch stains); soil dispersant to wash away soil and water softener (soda ash – a naturally occurring mineral)

I have sensitive skin and a chronic illness. I also care deeply about our environment. I’ll spend twice the money for a product that is better for us and our earth. I believe Seventh Generation Laundry Powder to be that.

I don’t have kids at home so I don’t have tough grass stains that other detergents say they get rid of. I do however hike and my clothes have gotten pretty dirty over the last two weeks. On settings from cold to hot; from gentle to regular Seventh Generation has cleaned our clothes. Free & Clear has no fragrance.

I have had problems with powder detergent in cold water not dissolving. I've had no problems (I just did 3 loads of laundry!) with Seventh Generation's Powder. My clothes did not have any white residue on them.

What I don’t like

I don’t like the packaging for travel purposes. The cardboard box can be recycled but once opened I have to tape it shut. I'm not rating this product down for this since it is situational and doesn't reflect negatively on the product itself.

I like it!

oooohhhh!!!! That was a little confusing but I got it now. I thought you used and liked both since this was under powder. I wish the liquid was cheaper. Even with the dollar coupon from their site it's still high. Well I'm going to try the liquid anyway!! Thank you very much for taking the time with this, Jo. I appreciate it.

I never use powder..period. Especially with cold water. I've had too many instance (no matter what detergent) of the powder not dissolving. Of course that could be an indication of how handy dandy I am!! Jo

Yes, it does help, Jo. Thanks. One more question - which do you think the liquid and poder work equally well or one better than the other?

I get it at the grocery store or Whole Foods - maybe even Target. I use the cold setting for just about everything but I use the warm setting for my husband's gym socks:) Hope this helps. Jo

Where on earth did you find it for $6.99? I almost bought some today but I think it was $* something at a natural foods store. I printed a coupon from the website and am looking forward to trying this. Was the cold setting good for socks too?

I have not tried the laudry powder, although it probably makes more sense to buy powder as opposed to liquid. It does a good job without all those harsh chemicals and petroleum products. Of course with most things that are natural and/or organic you pay more than you do for Tide, but I think the health of the planet and its people are worth it.
