I'm not a Buffy fan, I didn't watch the short-lived Firefly series that this movie is a continuation of either.  Josh W. created both....and this movie.

I found this film clever and very entertaining, more interesting and fun than the last 4 Star Wars films (though that might not be saying much I realize).

It's fairly close to an excellent Star Trek spin-off.  Unique of course, but it probably wouldn't have happened were it not for Kirk and Spock.

The crew of the Serenity is in trouble. They have been trying to avoid detection to protect Doctor Simon Tam (Sean Maher), and his gifted traumatized and telepathic younger sister, River (Summer Glau), from the ALLIANCE.

Simon and River had been previously rescued from the Alliance a year earlier. The rag-tag crew of the Serenity earn their living and survive by thievery but in a Robin Hood sort of way--so we like these anit-establishment anti-heroes just fine.

They take River on a robbery and the cannibal humans called Reavers attack. Simon decides for his own and sister's safty it is time to leave the crew of the Serenity, but then she goes crazy and tries to kill Capt. Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), until Simon says the magic word that puts her to sleep. Reynolds allows them back on board for safety but now an Alliance operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is on hot on their trail which makes Reynolds all the more determined to find out what "Miranda" (the trigger that drove River crazy) really means and what the Alliance is hiding/protecting.

I like having to pay attention to the plot twist of a big action packed science fiction movie that is made for people who like to use their brains a little bit when they watch movies.

It deserved to do much better at the box office than it did and maybe they'll do another film or two but I wouldn't hold my breath.

If you liked Serenity, you really should invest in the Firefly boxset. There's fourteen episodes, and you can get the set for as little as $15 dollars now, what with sales and such. There's so much backstory to the characters in the series; the movie will resonate more after seeing the story's beginning. It's well worth it!
