Sennheiser RS 120 Headphones: A treat for tired old ears
Not long ago my father-in-law, who has a considerable hearing problem asked me to look into wireless headphones for him that he could use while watching TV. Often when we're over at his home watching TV together, the volume is jacked up so high that for the rest of us it's become somewhat of a comical experience. Even with my own slight hearing problem, I find the needed volume to please his tired old ears a little hard to deal with. After a thorough search for a solution, I chose the Sennheiser RS 120 Wireless Headphones for him. The Sennheiser RS 120 Wireless Headphones are wireless and come with an AC powered transmitter/recharging base and can be attached to virtually any electronic sound source through the use of included RCA plugs or the 1/8" & 1/4" adapters. The system has a rated range of 328 ft. through walls. A more realistic way of judging their range is to say you will be able to receive a usable signal throughout your home. Operating on the 900MHz range interference from 2.4GHz & 5.8GHz devices such as cordless phones is minimized. After a week of testing the Sennheiser RS 120 Wireless Headphones I was pleased with their performance, particularly when used in concert with an HDTV. Specific aspects of the headphones are rated and discussed below. Sound Quality Sound quality of the RS 120s is quite good for a wireless headphone. The rated frequency response of 22Hz - 19500Hz) gives the listener a full range listening experience that while short of studio quality is far superior than any audio your TV could achieve on its own or even with the assistance of a powered Sound Bar. The headphones are powered by a pair of rechargeable NiMH AAA Batteries. While the cans are described as "over-the-ear", they more accurately sit "on-the-ear", but even so sound isolation is very good. The headphones allow you to adjust the volume independent of the volume setting on the sound source--in this case, the HDTV. The headphones can be further fine-tuned to eliminate any interference from other electronic sound sources. Comfort The head set is well cushioned and very light and thus extremely comfortable. However, these are relatively large cans and if you watch TV from bed, you'll be bothered if you fall asleep with them on. Design The open design of the Sennheiser RS 120 is smooth and functional. The use of open cell foam on the cans minimizes any heat build-up when worn for long periods of time. Although wireless headphones offer the ability to move around free of wires, I find that the phones have a somewhat loose fit that probably would present a problem to most if worn while exercising or while particularly active. Durability Sennheiser Headphones have an excellent reputation for durability. Given the short period of ownership it's difficult to rate these headphones on any other basis than reputation.
