Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed 5000  —

We got our Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed 5000 in 2004, when it was basically the top of the line. We had been sleeping on a full-size regular pillowtop matress for years. After much research, we decided on the queen-size with a Deluxe Sleep Number Firmness Control System. We have been and are very happy with it. My sleep number has gone up and down in the years. It's great to have a bed that can adjust to you! Sometimes I have gone up or down 10 numbers in one day.

My husband also loves it. My pets love it. Visiting relatives take it over. You get the picture. The warranty is a plus also. We are currently having an issue with one of the chambers slowly leaking out and they are being really helpful and taking care of it.

There is a narrow gap between the two chambers. There is a piece of foam stuck in there. In me and my husband's experience, it is not bothersome. But it is there and the level to which it would bother someone is completely personal. I would use the free trial and not buy outright if you have a question about how comfortable you would be. It completely depends on your sleep number and how big or small you are.

Also, this is not the greatest bed to have sex on. You either have to get both sides to the same number (and wait for it), or have really good balance since half of the bed is soft and half is firm. Again, that's not a dealbreaker for me. The comfort sleeping outweighs that for me.

One unusual thing is that because the matress is filled with air, it's lighter and easier to move around if you're the tossing-and-turning type. Forget putting a dust ruffle on the bed, because it ends up sliding around under the mattress and piled on the floor on one side of the bed. If you reposition it every day, you're fine, otherwise it's a losing battle. You should also buy some of those clamp things to put under the corners of the fitted sheets to keep them on. The sheet corners pop off pretty easily.

BEWARE though! Break that wireless remote and you are looking at $50 plus tax and shipping! Be careful! It isn't covered under the warranty.

I would recommend it to anyone who has a need for different firmness. It may seem pricey, but it will last a long time, and there is no other bed that boasts the dual chambers. I rate it 4 stars. It is above average because of the dual chambers, but ours is a pillowtop and they have a memory foam one now. I have laid on that one in the mall store and that seems like it would be excellent. It does kind of suck because we bought the foundation and legs, so you would think that it would be cheaper to just get the new mattress with the memory foam, but no. I got quoted $3200 for the mattress. I paid $2800 for the whole shebang including 2 pillows in 2004. They would rather you purchase the package deals, and I can't make a big investment like that again for some memory foam.

We were in the Army and we moved around a lot. When you arrive at a new duty station, sometimes it's weeks before you get your household goods. This bed is so lightweight and the plastic foundation comes apart. We easily took it with us in the SUV. We may not have had much in our house, but we had a comfortable place to sleep! We could not have fit a traditional mattress and boxspring in the car. If you move around, get it. It's all I can say.

No, I would not go back to springs. It is great because of the two sides. If you need different firmnesses, I would totally consider it. I am going to amend my review to include two things I read in other reviews: the gap in the middle, and sex. There is a narrow gap between the two chambers. I can see how some people would have a problem with it, I don't fall in. Some people have had real issues with it. Also, I'm not getting into details, but having half of the bed soft and half firm makes having sex on it a project. It is not conducive to spontanaeity. Also, I thought I gave it 4 stars. I previewed it, but I missed that. sorry.

You made this bed sound so great, but only gave it 3 stars? My husband and I really need this bed. I prefer a softer bed and my husband likes a firm bed for his back pain. Would you stick to this bed forever, or would you ever go back to a traditional spring mattress?
