When I was growing up, we depended on Sears Roebuck & Company for a lot of things -- clothes, stuff for the house, you name it.  If you aren't old enough to remember the old Big Book, you really missed something.  It had everything -- and I do mean everything -- not just clothes, personal items, and household goods but even machinery and PETS.  In the first half of the 20th Century, you could even order a whole HOUSE from the Sears Big Book.  The arrival of the seasonal Big Books (and especially the Christmas Wish Book) was an exciting event in most families.

In the old days, most of the people in this country -- even in the Metropolitan areas -- didn't have frequent access to major stores and certainly we had no Internet access back then, so Sears (and its major competitor Montgomery Wards) were really important to us.

To tell you the truth, with all the shopping and browsing available on the Internet today -- plus those gleaming shopping malls scattered here and there -- I sort of forgot about Sears for a while and seldom even visited their stores.  I only kept their credit card to pay monthly premiums on insurance policies I have in force with them.  So I was a little surprised when my dear Auntie (90 years young) told me she had been shopping around for a new quilt and pillow sham cover for her bedroom and that she had seen what she wanted in the Sears supplement in the Sunday newspaper.  She had the money for the item but It is difficult for her to get out to the Malls now and she doesn't have Internet access of her own.  To make a long story short, with a little intense planning between the two of us over the phone (and a lot of fun for me), I was able to place the order for her with Sears' website for the Blue Magnolia Star Quilt Set which happened to be $20 off the already not unreasonable price.

I placed the order Saturday evening with standard shipping and Aunt Tatty received it at 10:30 a.m. yesterday (Wednesday morning).  UPS delivered it to her door and it turned out to be just what she wanted.  She reimbursed me for its cost, saved $20, and avoided a horrific trip to the stores during the holiday season.  It is nice to know that we can still count on Sears, after all these years.

I don't shop at Sears because they don't have a petite dept. and I think the juniors dept. is too trendy/trashy for someone who wants a professional wardrobe. I am a JC Penney's, Dillards and Belk girl.

I do, however, remember the days of my childhood when I thought I was going big time with clothes from Sears and Montgomery Ward.

I also loved getting the Sears Wishbook every year. My siblings and I knew it was only a pipedream to look through that big catalogue and mark up what we wanted but every year we enjoyed doing it just the same. ~Gigi

Well, actually, she paid for the set. She asked me to have the bill sent to her along with the package and then she "settled up" with me. Of course, we give each other things and I love to buy presents for her but paying for some of the stuff is important. If I insisted on paying for whatever she is shopping for, she would just fold up and stop telling me about thigns she needs and I don't want that to happen. My auntie has been good about managing money and can afford things -- it's just th getting out to shop that's difficult for her. I am amazed at how much she does achieve on her own and hope that I have inherited those great longevity genes! (But she did enjoy having that great bed set just delivered to her door, like in the old days from Sears!)

A lovely review. It's so nice that you did that for your aunt. She'll be even happier with it knowing it's from you.

COLD? It's freezing here -- I had to put a sweater on the other day it was 62. :D I was amazed to find jeans at Sears that fit my teenage daughter (the way I thought they should) and in cute styles.

Okay, thanks Laurie! (My aunt has been good to me too. I'm sure you are also a wonderful aunt!) Stay warm! I'm going off for a while!

It's so cold here too! We already have snow! I'm looking out the window and the roofs are all covered with it. I'm in NY so I'm pretty used to it but I still don't like having it this early!! You are so good to your Aunt. I'm sure it meant the world to her to have you order that set for her. Have a great day and keep warm!

It's so cold and chilly here today! (I'm in Illinois.) I feel like winter is coming in before the leaves are even off the trees! I'm glad you found things you needed at Sears. I never did get totally used to their stores but now that I think of it, I did find some good things over the recent years. I think I just got spoiled from shopping online and stuff. I'm so glad I could help my aunt -- she has plenty of money to pay for stuff but it's so hard for older people to get out to the malls and walk around so much and stuff. I really love my aunt and BOY she really loves that Blue Magnolia whatchamacallit! Take care, Laurie. I'm going out there today and see if you have some reviews I haven't read yet. I told Patty the other day that things really begin to jump when you're lucky enough to have a nice long list of fans and friends who are great writers. Sometimes you can hardly keep up with all the great reviews but I've learned alot from other people's experiences. Well, I'll catch ya later!
