When I was growing up, we depended on Sears Roebuck & Company for a lot of things -- clothes, stuff for the house, you name it. If you aren't old enough to remember the old Big Book, you really missed something. It had everything -- and I do mean everything -- not just clothes, personal items, and household goods but even machinery and PETS. In the first half of the 20th Century, you could even order a whole HOUSE from the Sears Big Book. The arrival of the seasonal Big Books (and especially the Christmas Wish Book) was an exciting event in most families.
In the old days, most of the people in this country -- even in the Metropolitan areas -- didn't have frequent access to major stores and certainly we had no Internet access back then, so Sears (and its major competitor Montgomery Wards) were really important to us.
To tell you the truth, with all the shopping and browsing available on the Internet today -- plus those gleaming shopping malls scattered here and there -- I sort of forgot about Sears for a while and seldom even visited their stores. I only kept their credit card to pay monthly premiums on insurance policies I have in force with them. So I was a little surprised when my dear Auntie (90 years young) told me she had been shopping around for a new quilt and pillow sham cover for her bedroom and that she had seen what she wanted in the Sears supplement in the Sunday newspaper. She had the money for the item but It is difficult for her to get out to the Malls now and she doesn't have Internet access of her own. To make a long story short, with a little intense planning between the two of us over the phone (and a lot of fun for me), I was able to place the order for her with Sears' website for the Blue Magnolia Star Quilt Set which happened to be $20 off the already not unreasonable price.
I placed the order Saturday evening with standard shipping and Aunt Tatty received it at 10:30 a.m. yesterday (Wednesday morning). UPS delivered it to her door and it turned out to be just what she wanted. She reimbursed me for its cost, saved $20, and avoided a horrific trip to the stores during the holiday season. It is nice to know that we can still count on Sears, after all these years.
