We had our mattress purchased/delivered by Macy's in mid May 2008.  Now it is December 2008, almost 7 months later.

When we first got the mattress, we had no issues with it.  We tested it out extensively in the stores (as well as many other mattresses).  However, a few months ago, I noticed a dip on my husband's side of the bed (he is 6'1, approximately 275 pounds plus).  I thought the dip was due to his size - double the size of me almost.  I knew we had an issue when I started to feel the dips on my side of the bed as well.

Right around the same time, I started getting recurring back problems, on my lower lumbar.  Coincidence?  I think so!  I've never had back issues before up until now and let me tell you - those who have back issues will agree - they are not fun!

We contacted Macy's recently after I went to the doctors to look at my back.  The doctor asked several times the condition of our bed.  Thats when we went back and looked at it in greater details.  You can tell significantly where we each lay - there is a ridge down the middle where we do not lay as often. Near the ends of the bed we do not have lumps either.

We realized we had an issue and contacted Macy's.  Their process is to send out an inspector (this took about 2 weeks even though I told them I"ve been having recurring back pain).  They finally came out.

In the end, the inspector deemed the Sealy pillowtop / firm mattrress as "defective".  He measured and you could clearly see a 2.5" - 3" hole in the mattress - he laid a ruler across and it clearly shows a large dip!

Macy's has agreed to return the mattress, so unfortunately I am sleeping in the middle ridge of the bed and the end of the bed until we can make a switch.  My only hope is that my back problem goes away with a new mattress!   As this review is not about Macy's I will not go into further details about them.  In the end though, they are agreeing to let us swap mattresses but we have to saty in the same family.  The bed we are looking at is, in fact, a Sealy, so we are not opposed to getting another Sealy bed as it is a reputable name.

We are also happy that Macy's has been willing to exchange the mattress.  The box spring is another issue (I will need to call to confirm we can exchange that and I will be doing that today - should hopefully not be an issue as the bed we want to get in exchange costs 1K more!)

Our next bed we will be staying away from pillowtops and we are looking into a latex mattress/box spring.  Anyone who has a bed like this I would appreciate your comments ;)

In the end, I would suggest NOT getting this bed.  We also know that the Sales person at Macy's who sold us this particular mattress - Sealy Moon Scape / Firm Pillowtop - told us that at least 5 or 6 other people have told him the same issue.  So we know that we are not the first!  When the sales person tells you, you know that there is definitely an issue!

I had the same problem with Sealy Posterpedic Reserve
Moon Scape mattress. Macy's replaced it today with a Sealy Posterpedic Signature Hidden Meadows cushion firm. It is suppose to be a 1 step upgrade per Macy's. I hope this does not turn out to be a nightmare.

Hi. No I haven't done anything about it, too many issues with elderly parents (health). I don't think Spring Air is Sealy, I think it is it's own company. The place I bought it said they would replace it. What I want to do first is to takethe mattress off and and lay in on the living room floor to see if it is really the mattress or not. My husband thinks it is the fact that there are twin foundations plus the center bar of the frame and that these prevent the middle of the mattress from being even. If that is the case, then we won't get a king size again...I would get a queen...next time my husband wants to try one of the select comfort beds with the air mattress. For now we'll muddle through till we get some use out of this one.

How long have you been using the Moon Scape?

Great to know Macy's was so flexible, I was scared they would be difficult. I called Sealy and the girl in the call center told me that the industry standard is to make beds that "conform" to your body and that it is perfectly normal in all Sealy mattresses to have the dips! I told her that I would like not not roll into the dip everythime I turn over in the bed, especially since I bought a FIRM mattress. She seemed to think I was crazy. Hopefully, I will have better luck with Macys. Thanks again for your advice!

So sorry to hear you had the same issue, its pretty crazy that Macy's continues to sell that mattress! I'm ready to send my back pain "Therapy" bills to them (good thing I have insurance as the co-pays are not that expensive, but still!)... actually I am thinking about writing a complaint letter and including my co-pays at least........ but really, why would they continue to sell it if so many people are having issues??

We ended up getting the Sealy "Posturepedic purembrace" -- Autumn Garden Firm - King bed again. I feel like I am going crazy now b/c I am paranoid about getting more back pains but I just mentioned the other day that I felt like there may be a dip... but it could've just been b/c our sheets had gotten wrinkled. My back feels great now (took it quite a while to get back in order, and its still not 100%), so if thats any indication then I think this is a good mattress! He is probably twice the weight I am though and he doesn't think there is any dips so i think I am just paranoid....

The unfortunate thing is that this mattress we got was like, twice the cost of the other one. It was close to 3K. I didn't want any more "pillowtops" after that other experience though.

Good luck! Macy's was great with our return process so I am sure they will do the same for you. Oh- one thing - they at first only were going to return the mattress, and we would keep the box spring. when we decided on the one we got it is a completely different setup -- both mattress & boxspring are latex and not your typical boxspring, so i had to call macy's back and get a new "return #" and they took it back. Just FYI if you veer off from the same type of product you'll need to probably get another return ID #.

Hope this all made sense I rambled.... let me know if you have other questions!

Hello, we ended up getting the Sealy Posturepedic purembrace - Autumn Garden Firm its called through Macy's again. I THINK it is OK, but I mentioned to my husband the other night I felt like it was also getting a ridge. I hope not as this mattress is like, twice the price of the other one! I don't know if its my paranoia or my imagination .... but the next time we change the sheets I want to take the mattress cover off completely to check it out to make sure I'm not going crazy! Did you end up getting a different mattress from the Spring Air (Is that through Sealy also?)

I have the same problem with my Moonscape "Firm" mattress...had it only 4 months. I am glad I found your review online! Just called Macy's and they are sending the technician out. Are you happy with the Sealy replacement that you got?

sharonst wrote on Jan 23, 2009 at 7:57PM

Please tell me how the new mattress is working out. We had a Simmors or SEaly and it had the the "ridge" within 2 years; now we have a Spring Air, and it has the same problem within 6 months. Thanks.
