Scrabble Classic Edition —

Our family is in the process of rediscovering the board games popular when we were kids.  And sometimes the simplest concept, without all the bells, buzzers, whistles, lights, and other gadgets can yield the most fun.  The great thing about Scrabble is that it adapts to the age levels playing.  Adults can play on a more complex and challenging level without requiring add on packs or extra equipment.  You can play as a family with several age groups participating, and the possibilities are endless.  And for teaching kids to focus and think ahead, scrabble is a great choice.  So much of what kids are exposed to doesn't encourage maintaining focus, and so many game choices are solitary and in front of a computer or gaming system rather than interacting with others.  The classic game is not costly and with a little care (not letting the dog eat the tiles) it will last virtually forever.  And it is fun to watch the kids get better and present a real challenge to the adults.  I have found that it helps with spelling and reading at school to participate in this particular board game.  It also expands vocabulary, because kids are naturally curious and want to know what the cool words that Mom and Dad are using mean.   And if the word has an exceptionally high score value, I guarantee that they will remember how to spell it for future use against you.
