The last time I moved one of the biggest headaches I ran into was storing those Styrofoam peanuts needed for packing. They take up a lot of room and cling to everything they touch. Now 3M has a new product I'm trying as I prepare to move again. It's sold under their Scotch brand (makers of Scotch tape) and called Scotch Packing Noodles.
How do they differ from normal packing peanuts? These packing noodles are sold in a Styrofoam block that's roughly 10'' X 12'' in size. This makes it easy to store. When ready to use, just unwrap the block, give it a twist and the zig-zag shaped noodles will fall off.
Scotch makes three big claims for this product, as follows:
In my experience the block is very easy to break apart. The little ''noodles'' form a good cushioned bed in a box to store and transport something too. It's not easy to break off just part of the block though. At some point the whole thing falls apart.
These are also free of static cling too, and seem to resist settling as claimed. One drawback though is that the 0.21 cu feet size of the Styrofoam block cost almost $5 and is only enough for one medium sized packing box. I would go broke buying large quantities of these needed in a move.
In my experience Scotch Packing Noodles do work pretty well, as advertised. And they do save on storage space. However, they are best for sending a package or two through the mail and not for moving a whole household. The price is just too high, so I'll rate these as a average product and hold they eventually sell them in bigger blocks at a affordable price.
