Scotch Packing Noodles —

The last time I moved one of the biggest headaches I ran into was storing those Styrofoam peanuts needed for packing. They take up a lot of room and cling to everything they touch. Now 3M has a new product I'm trying as I prepare to move again. It's sold under their Scotch brand (makers of Scotch tape) and called Scotch Packing Noodles

How do they differ from normal packing peanuts?  These packing noodles are sold in a Styrofoam block that's roughly 10'' X 12'' in size. This makes it easy to store. When ready to use, just unwrap the block, give it a twist and the zig-zag shaped noodles will fall off.

Scotch makes three big claims for this product, as follows:

  • Saves on storage space
  • No static cling
  • Resists settling

In my experience the block is very easy to break apart. The little ''noodles'' form a good cushioned bed in a box to store and transport something too. It's not easy to break off just part of the block though. At some point the whole thing falls apart.

These are also free of static cling too, and seem to resist settling as claimed. One drawback though is that the 0.21 cu feet size of the Styrofoam block cost almost $5 and is only enough for one medium sized packing box. I would go broke buying large quantities of these needed in a move.

In my experience Scotch Packing Noodles do work pretty well, as advertised. And they do save on storage space. However, they are best for sending a package or two through the mail and not for moving a whole household. The price is just too high, so I'll rate these as a average product and hold they eventually sell them in bigger blocks at a affordable price.

Thanks for the comment. I'll be moving this weekend - at least that's the gameplan. I hope it's not 100 degrees - my new place is not air conditioned!

Does sound kinda pricey. I wonder why they always give these things food names? How're you doing with your move?

A long time ago, for $1 each, I purchased 2 packs of the noodles-packing, and also had a coupon to get a refund. I never used the noodles nor sent in for the refund.

Just like with bubble wrap, I always thought that I'd NEED A LOT of the packing-noodles to CUSHION an item - plus I use recycled materials [newspaper, circulars cardboard, egg cartons, shredded paper] to pack and ship my sold ebay items.

I'm going to try these noodles out soon. Initially, I planned to try out these noodles to pack an ebay ITEM FOR SHIPPING...I can't imagine using these noodles to PACK to MOVE.

Thanks for commenting on my packaging noodles review. I have just 2-1/2 weeks until moving day!

I'm hoping not to have to use these any time soon for moving, but if they came up with something with no static cling, I'd be all over that...nothing worse than trying to flick packing peanuts off everything around you after you open a box!

Hi Gigi. Yes, I have found a house - closing will be in July. I'm looking forward to owning a home again instead of renting. Have a nice day !

When I saw the price and how much space it would cover I was wondering who could afford to use these in alot of packing boxes. So, have you found another place yet or are you just starting to pack upt to get ready for another move?
